    GTX Axle questions

Does anyone know if the Stock AWD axles and intermediate shafts will fit the GTX transmission? I might have a lead on a GTX Trans, shifter cables, and Shifter Assembly. Also would the FWD axles and Intermediate Shaft work as well?

I am a newb to the AWD system, but no for long :D

4wd MT axles fit. 2wd axles are thicker and have different joints.

i think he edited that at some point, moments before i posted.

the 2wd passenger side axle *might* work (even though its somewhat different), but the intermediate shaft and drivers side axle are different IIRC. i think craig had a 2wd axle on his front PS before.

ok, so I can use the 4wd shaft and axles? Oh and would it be possible for someone to take a measurement of their rear width from rim to rim? I found it was 65.9 inches wide on wikipedia, and I was just curious to see if that was what it actually was, because my car is 65.7 inches wide, but the protege just seems so much wider...

it should be in the PDF FSM's if you have those.

if not they are a great thing to have. PM me your email address...

I have a pic on my camera comparing the 2wd and 4wd pass axle. the 2wd (the one I broke) is far thicker than the 4wd, and fit with no issues. I cannot vouch for the driver side.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

I did a little research on the 323forums and they said that the driver's side one has to be either a stock AWD protege, or a GTX one.

Does anyone know of the AWD steering knuckles are the same as the FWD knuckles on the BG chasis?

they aren't, because it uses different LCA's. if you use FWD stuff it will mess up the alignment.

Thanks for the info, I will have to move my rack up higher on the firewall so that I can make room for the rear differential. Does the AWD version have a shorter steering column?

... didn't know the LCAs were different. Guess I'll hang on to my extra set.

I wouldn't say the steering is shorter, it just set up higher on the firewall, so the angle into the cab changes.

I'm guessing you're trying to put the awd into a fwd?

Yes I am, I am in the planning stages of what will hopefully be my senior capstone design project for my BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology. I am starting out with a 1995 Ford Aspire, which is hardly stock when it comes to the drive train. I've already swapped in an F-series Transmission out of an 88 Mercury Tracer (only had 18K miles and I got it for $50), And it is currently powered by a B8-ME out of a 92 Protege. I have roughly $700 into the car, including what I paid for it. Its like driving a fairly powerful go-kart on the road everyday. I want to do something that will stand out for my senior project and what better than an AWD Aspire? Plus how much of a sleeper would it be to all those unsuspecting honduh drivers that think their cars are hot as hell. :D

For axles, the driver's side is different for sure, and I believe the halfshaft is different as well. Did you compare the widths of the protege and the aspire? cause you will end up needing widebody fenders I believe
