    bp-ze

    im new into the bp motors i just started oval track racing with them last year. i have two motors and dont know which one is better. i was told that mine is called a bp-ze. what exactly does that mean? it has 20,000 miles since complete rebuild. if i dont use it i will probably sell it so what would it be worth? and is the bp better than bp-ze?

          iirc the bpze was the miata version and was different enough to warrant the designation

              Not sure how accurate wikipedia is on this subject, but here's what it has to say. It's worth reading the whole page, as it addresses the other BP variants in the Miata BP-4W and BP-Z3 (similar name to BP-ZE, so thats probably where the confusion comes from):

              "The 1.8 L (1839 cc) BP is a dual-overhead variant of the B8. It was first found in the 1989 Mazda Familia and American-market 1990 Mazda Protege LX. This engine was dubbed BP-ZE and featured a forged crankshaft, piston oil squirters, an aluminum baffled oil pan, and Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS). This particular variant can be found in the following vehicles:

              * 1989-1994 Mazda Familia GT (European & Australian Market)
              * 1989-1994 Ford Laser TX3 (Australian Market)
              * 1990-1994 Mazda Protege LX (with VICS)
              * 1990-1991 and 1993 Mazda Protege GT (Canadian Market)
              * 1990-1993 Mazda 323 (European Market)
              * 1992-1993 Ford Escort LX-E
              * 1991-1996 Ford Escort GT
              * 1991-1996 Mercury Tracer LTS
              * 1994-1997 Kia Sephia GS
              * 1994-1998 Mazda Familia (Japanese Market)
              * 1994-1997 Mazda MX-5/Miata (this did not have VICS until 1999)

              There is also a non-performance version that is most easily recognized by its black stamped-steel oil pan. It also features a cast crankshaft, no oil squirters, a plastic oil pickup tube and less aggressive camshafts. It is found in the 1995-1998 Mazda Protege ES."

                96-97 miata BP's are 9:1 compression rather than 8.8:1. other than that its the same.

                99-00 miatas are 9.5:1 (?) compression, and have a redesigned head with solid lifters and more agressive cams. this is the BP-4W. the block stayed the same.

                    the compression increase came with OBD2, thats why it happened in 96 with the miata.

                        so the rumor that some first gens got the .2 compression increase are unfounded?

                          i'd imagine so. find a 94 motor and pull it apart, the pistons will look different if they are 9.0:1

                          also i was not aware that this rumor even existed until this thread.
