    Downshift problem & sluggish

When i'm driving 30 or 40 down a road, and I get to a stop sign and do a complete stop, my tranny (auto tranny SOHC) seems not to be downshifting into first. It's only when i pound on the gas when it downshifts

Also when my car is at operating temp, seems like the tranny is shifting harder during accelleration and sometimes noticably
    sluggish.

Is this a sign of a cooling problem or low trans oil or bad tranny

Low oil would be the first thing to check, there is a good description of how to check it in the manual.

When was the last time you had the transmission fluid changed?

Eh... if it hasn't been changed for a long time (~40-50,000miles), it would be better to just leave it. Just top off the fluid.
