    Street mod/ GRM challenge 323

I'm going to cover every fine detail in this thread. Go ahead and comment / ask questions. Call me out if my pricing is unreasonable or seems wrong.

The idea of the GRM challenge is to spend $2008 on a car then compete in a drag, show, and autocross. This seems like a good goal to work towards since I was planning on buying a car for about $2000 this spring. I was going to get a miata but frankly this $2000 323 would destroy a $2000 miata. You can sell back only so much in parts (I forget the rule) and free/already owned things go for "fair market value".

I'm also going to use it for autocrossing.

Here is what I have so far

    199something 323 - $200

    G series tranny -
Championship white paint (leftovers from a friend) -
    Random struts -
Ebay coil sleeves - (All of these things cost $150)
GTX ceramic coated exhaust manifold - $200
GTX 3 hole front bumper (damaged) and 626 lip ($25)
    GTX ECU $175
Escort GT rear sway bar - FMV
    Escort zx2 FSB - Junkyard price ($10?)
    Endlinks and bushings ($20-ish)
GTX hardpipe and coupler ($45 including shipping)
Starion intercooler and a few pipes (FMV)
    Boost gauge (FMV)
    Pillar gauge mount (FMV)
    MX3 seats $20

16x7 wheels with worn out kumho v710 tires $80

Here are things I don't have yet

    Knock sensor -
    Downpipe -
GTX injectors - (probably getting all or most of this as a trade for an SAFCII [$150])
    VJ20 turbo (200?)
Turbo oil / water lines (40?)
    Intercooler couplers (50?)
    Clutch (150?)
BP motor ($150 at the junkyard)
Axles (? used, $150 for both new)
Blowoff valve (might not even use one)
Stuff to fill motor mounts ($10)
BP wiring harness (JY price, 10-20)
Other gauges I might need (?)
    Misc interior parts (?)
Parts for doing body work (?)
Disc brake swap (might not do yet)
    Camber adjustment (?)

    Things I can sell

    B6 motor
    Stock springs and struts
    Stock wheels and tires

As you can see I can probably pull this off but it's going to be close. If it gets to the point of me having to half ass the car I'll throw the budget out and do it right.

I'll start posting pics of all my stuff eventually..

awesome. I look forward to seeing this.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

            I wouldnt get used axles.
And I would run a 1gen eclipse bpv as it "can" be cheap.

used axles should be fine as long as the boots are intact. ive been running an assortment of used axles that friends had lying around in their garages with no problems.

Yeah and sometimes you can find low-miles replacement axles at the junkyard. Actually the 323 has new-ish axles, maybe someone with an f-box can use em..

"lifetime warranty"Remanufactured axles last about 2 years for me.

That's includes stints of drag, autox, track, and general tom foolery.

                    New axles are $60-70.
they're not going to break the bank.

On my car and my friend's car, our OEM axles lasted to about 200,000 miles. I'll take a low miles used OEM axle over a new reman'd one ANY day.

Well, you gotta remember Kitty, this has a budget of $2008, and fair market value of $60 axles, that he got for free, while counting against his $2008, doesn't hurt his actual wallet. Its a win win no matter what.

1967- Good luck on the build! Are you gonna built active ground effect ala the Cheaparral?

For those that didn't see the results of the 07 Challenge, the winning car was a C4 Vette that had a flexible skirt from the bottom of the car to a frame that sat low to the ground, with a snowmobile motor mounted in the passenger space to drive an exhaust fan from an M1 tank that sucked air through a hole in the floor causing a vacuum that supposedly made 1000lb of downforce. The engine had a twin turbo setup too. They called it the "Cheaparral" as a homage to the Chaparral 2J "vacuum car" of 1970: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaparral_Cars
                            Brilliant!

My car will definitely LOOK better than that corvette... as far as performance though, not so much. To be completely honest I am considering abandoning the challenge idea completely since the 2008 one is in Florida, and it won't be until 2009 that it's on the West coast. Also, certain (budget killing) opportunities such as the LSD have come along, and I'd rather have a $2500 car that's competitive where I race it than a half assed $2000 car. Anyway I'm going to continue to do updates as well as budget tracking just so you guys can keep track of the project if you care.
