    upgrades for stock gtr

first off ive searched the forums for this answer and most of you are running stand alone or some type of eng managment, but what i want to know is how to get power from the gtr( pretty much stock) like how much boost i can run without having to do fuel uprades and what timing(safe) adjustments i could do thanks

Timing I would leave alone and boost on the VJ23 about 17-18psi before you run out of fuel on the stock computer. That should be good for 12 second passes with slicks in the quarter mile if the motor and tranny are in good shape.

i'm assuming you already have a large FMIC, 3" exhaust, etc?

are you running the stock GTX side mount then?
When you upgrade i need a useable gtx intercooler for autox.

dont bother upping the boost till you add the FMIC

Also there is no fuel cut on the BPC8 (GTR) ECU. You will simply start running lean.

I have to say that I have expirienced fuel/boost cut with my BPC8 ecu. Alot of that comes from the AFM and not the ECU. I know when I was running my GTC (BP26)ecu and turbo II afm I never ran into boost cut up to 16psi. With my current setup, I actually boost spike over 20psi to hold 14-15psi (no ported waste gate ) but I have hit boost cut at about 24psi with the GTR ecu and same turbo II afm.
                My 2 cents

Makes sense Jason, thank you for the clarification. The BPC8 ECU has a much higher boost cut because the GTR ECU and fuel system can handle a lot more air intake.

that seems odd, if you are talking about on a GTX turbo (thats what you have, right?). if you could even get a vj20 to pump out 24psi i doubt it would be blowing any more air than a vj23 at like 15psi...

That's why I say its more to do with the AFM then the ecu as far as a boost/fuel cut. I had a customer car that I did a GTX swap to and with the GTX AFM he was hitting boost cut at 12psi. I swapped him over to an N/A RX-7 AFM and he didn't have the boost cut any more.
And yes I am still on the VJ-20 turbo (poor turbo having to deal with 20+psi boost spikes). If the AFM door gets opened to far or to fast it fuel boost cuts. And for me its normally only in 5th gear when I really have to deal with it, every once in a while in 4th.
                      Jason

EDIT: I have also run with a GTR AFM but I never dealt with it long enough to see if I would get boost cut. I didn't have my EVC or my SAFC at the time and the car would rum pig rich at idle

some say the GTR ecu has a fuel cut
others say it doesnt, and in some cases are running 23psi from it

either way.. when the AFM hits the 0 volt signal the GTR ecu just dumps the fuel and max's the injectors, where the GTX ecu will trigger the cut

Holy cow Jason, spikes to 20 on a vj20? Your intake temps must be to the moon...
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

honestly never checked my intake temps, but I am running a 24 x 6 x3 intercooler core, so I know that helps some
