New guy here with some pictures and a story...

First off, it's good to see there is a still a great community like this. Back in 2001-02 era, I was back on the ERDT boards with my old 89' Escort LX.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty kickin' at the time. After that, it was replaced a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2. Worlds better than the old beater.

Shortly after purchase, a truck ended my affair with Escorts and the like for a while.
I peered out from the castle window and looked over the splendor of ROTM county. Yes, twas' a much simpler time back then. Peasants would go about their postings, and I, the mod, would rule over them with an iron fist.

After that, I dabbled in various other automotive areas. I'll drop a quick line about some previous projects/beaters before I show off my new prize.

First off, I picked up a 1986 Merkur XR4Ti. I converted it to a T-5 manual, Cosworth headlamps and rear spoiler, ported exhaust manifold, 3" custom exhaust, and a few other bits.
    (Early in the project)

I played with that Merkur for a bit while driving my new daily, the 1997 Nissan Altima.

Over the years, the Altima has been serving as a daily driver while I jumped into various other projects.

First off was the super rusty 1990 Nissan 240sx. I should have never began this horrible beast. I easily spent over 200+hours welding new steel into the underbody. Even when completed, I feared it's safety - I parted it out and crushed the body.

After that, I vowed to avoid rust repair as much as possible. In stepped my next love, my 1987 Toyota MR2. I'm in the middle of a 4AGZE (supercharged) motor swap, with Megasquirt, Ford EDIS, custom intake manifold, and various other bits. It's my summer only car.

So, that brings us to now. The Altima will be rolling over 300,000km soon and it's in dire need of replacement. I've been debating about purchasing something newer, a la 2001-02, but nothing really appealed to me in my price range. So, my love of the old Escort came back. This time, it was in the ideal chassis.

Some of the pictures from the way home with the new project...

AH GOD! THERE'S A 323 RIDING OUR ARSE! JUST PASS!

        Back at the shop.

        Got rust? Nope!

220,000miles, 5 speed, A/C, manual steering, manual windows, hard top. The car was from the southern US, so the body is kick-arse clean for Ontario.

This little beast will be receiving a host of Escort GT upgrades (motor, tranny, brakes) over the coming months. Also, the entire rust-free underbody is getting a thorough coating of POR-15.

nice score man. You towed that all the way from southern us!!
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

Yesterday morning in grid (still dark, and I'm busy changing tires), I see another car that looks like a 323, but I can clearly see that it has painted A pillars but no clips holes, so I think "that can't be a 323, it's doesn't have missing A pillar trim..." It was a 323GTX I had a nice chat with the owner later in the day.

Actually, I found it locally in Ontario. Some other gentleman had gone through the effort of dragging it up here for me!

Yup! It's going to replace the Altima as soon as it's ready for the road. I ordered up some S/R ZX2 struts. Mounts and springs will come next, then time to hit the wrenches for some install.

I'm hoping to add the following before putting it on the road:
                        - ZX2 S/R Struts
                        - Lowering springs of some sort (not sure on which particular set yet)
                        - New upper strut mounts
                        - New Escort GT front brakes
                        - New Escort GT rear disc setup (junkyard time)
                        - Escort GT 7-spoke 15" rims wrapped in some nice 205/50/15 all season rubber
                        - Paint underbody and below carpet in POR-15 to keep the body pristine
                        - Battery moved to hatch/trunk in a sealed box (gel-cell anyway, to be safe)
                        - New driver's seat (I'm not riding on that busted arse seat - this ain't no ghetto hooptie). I think a 20L bucket might be more comfortable than those springs poking me in the butt. Either MX-3 seats or aftermarket here.
                        - New steel hard brake lines - front to back
                        - Stainless steel flex hoses (not sure how old the stocker's are - probably factory)
                        - Some nicer paint would be kickass

Anyways, look forward to lots of pictures of the build. It's a habit of mine.

EDIT: Also, paid-user of these forums now as well.

Hey Sockington, I remember your Merkur and 240 from AI on Something Awful. I left AI before you completed and subsequently parted out the 240, but I always thought that was one of the best/worst projects ever. Best in that the concept was very cool (Ford 2.3T in a 240SX? :krad: ) but worst in that JESUS GOD THE RUST.

That is indeed a pretty clean 323 you have there. Guess you won't have to weld steel plate to the frame rails on this one
