evo... from the factory with 300 hp
protege... from the factory with 100
the 4wd pro is not even remotely in the same class as the evo, so the comparison is pointless/
a 4wd is just not made to handle clutch drops gtx/gtr/usdm... period... its just not strong enough, thats emense amounts of stress, get a good clutch and slip your clutch before you try to slip your tires... NEVER dump the clutch, just ride it out of first if need be.There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

I never dump the clutch on pavement. The rallycar gets launched at every stage start but that's on gravel and even then it's not a dump, more of a sliplaunch. There's a bit of a technique to launching awd on gravel if you ain't got launch control...
The BPT trans isn't as weak as the BF one, but it's no Toyota box or an xtrac. I find it hard to believe that stock 100 hp would break one though, even with a 4krpm clutch dump. You may have just gotten "lucky", with a trans that's been abused and not maintained. Fresh gearlube, of the redline mtl/heavy shockproof or better yet torco GL 6 rated variety will help your next trans live longer, as will being mechanically sympathetic to it.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

I tore the teeth off 2nd gear once. That's the only bpt trans I've busted. I put that one down as getting lucky, I was on the damn street at the time just rowing through the gears, grabbed 2nd and floored it, got up to around 5 grand and BANG that's all she wrote.'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and

no the evo is RATED at 300 and the GTR is RATED at 210... all these 300 hp dyno pulls on gtr's is because no one ever does a "stock" swap, no one EVER just gets a complete front clip and swaps every little stock part to make it look like it rolled off a mazda lot like that... they do exhaust, intercooler, more boost, standalone managment... plus they are all on fwd's with less drivetrain loss... so the evos 270 they put to the wheels is still a long way aways from the gtr's 180.
reguardless, these things are not built like a tank, so dont treat them like one and they will take care of youThere are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

You're best off replacing the whole thing. If it's just the centerdiff that failed, you could conceivable just change that out, but more than likely looking at something on the main cluster shaft. All that silver stuff has degraded every other internal part in there. When you put the new-to-you one in, flush it out real good first...'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and

It could just be the carrier on the back of the tranny.
But, I kinda think it would have given you some advance warning.
I'm told the other major weakness with these gearboxes is the strength of the case where it holds the bearings on either end of the two shafts with all the gears on.
When a lot of power is applied... the gears climb upwards bending and breaking the shafts and or tearing the bearings from the case. The UK/OZ guys have thick steel plates they put inside the case to help strengthen them.
You can use a St185 celica alltrac tranny and rear end.
Also seen Evo trannys in the GTX.
Take this for what it's worth. I haven't broken a BPT tranny. I'm running a factory gearbox in my car and It doesn't break because I don't drive the living daylights out of the car and realize that AWD systems like to rip themselves apart if the wheels can't slip. These AWD systems were never made for clutch dumps on Tarmac. They were made to aid in grip in situations where there is a loss of coefficient of friction on the road surface.
Ever take a peek under the car and look at the size of the CV axles? How bout the Rear Diff? Or the carrier on the gearbox. It's barely bigger than lawnmower grade ****. What the hell would give you the idea to clutch dump the car from a standstill @ peak torque?
If you want the gearbox to last. Don't go holeshotting the car on pavement and don't powershift the gears.
