    exhaust help

my car has been getting louder lately...
in comparison to my friend's stock escort gt, and any other protege i've heard pass by, it's at least twice as loud...

i'm thinking i probably have to replace my muffler...
i want something with purpose... i like the simple design and low price of wil's dynomax superturbo muffler, but i kind of want to keep the dual tip look...
i'm not too concerned with noise, but some of the places i go would really not like me driving up at midnight with a ricer set up...
    low rumble would be nice...

i'm interested in replacing all the stock tubing with a custom catback, but i don't even know where to start and i don't know enough to be able to tell if i'm getting raped by the muffler shop...

i'm looking for a good complement to my someday arriving CAI.

Your car might be getting louder because of an exhaust leak somewhere. You don't have to replace the muffler if there are no holes or badly rusted spots on it. Try tracking down exactly where the extra noise is coming from. As for a custom catback, it shouldn't cost more than $200., maybe a bit more if it's mandrel bent. Make sure that you don't get anything over 2.25" A 2" setup might be best for you as you are not pushing any extra power. I have an R1 muffler and I am very happy with the way it sounds. Not too loud and it has a deep tone to it. Paid a lot for it about 2 years ago but haven't had any problems so far.

well i'm figuring if i'm going to do any replacing, i'm going to lean closer to a performance setup than a stock replacement...

i know everybody hates the pacesetter exhaust, but isn't there something i could coat it in, to keep it from rusting out?
i'd probably get a different muffler with it anyway...
i'm thinking something with a silencer... maybe...

a 2" pipe size is fine. It will give you better low end response for everyday driving. 2.25" will give you more top end gains, high RPM. Choose your weapon

The Pace muffler sounds like ass, but the piping is fine, atleast in my case, but it is 2.25", but it is also only $150 for the complete deal, but another $80 to $150 for a good muffler...BUUUUUUT a custom 2" mandrel bent or 2.25" crush bent and a muffler of your choice will probably run you a bit less, ~$50. (there's alot of "but's" in there )

It's been said that a 2.25" crush bent pipe will probably put you in the middle of 2" and 2.25" in terms of flow. A little more than 2" but a little less than 2.25". That make sense?

As for the silencer type mufflers, they work well, i notice atleast a 50% reduction in noise. But they don't come in a dual tip, as you wanted to keep that style. In that case, i'd suggest a Remus, Bosal, Borla muffler. They all make quality products and they have a nice tone to them, actually i'd lean more towards Remus, as thier dual tips are pretty sweet, not flashy, just plain and aggressive and they sound right too.

        Food for thought

I almost went with the remus style but decided on the DTM instead. Both would look nice on a 1st gen.

due to my budget, i know i'm probably going to end up with an ebay imitation, after doing a lot of pricing...

the remus and dtm styles are both pretty good looking...
i'm just hoping i won't regret an imitation...

i'm interested in getting crush bent piping, but i don't really know where to start...

heh imitation mufflers, write apexi on a fart cannon so itll make you feel better. =) the threads about your exhaust being loud, but you wanna go bigger piping and a performance muffler? i'd say just go to a meineke, get 2" cat-back with a flowmaster or dynomax with a tip. im sure you could get it all done for $125.

now that i actually have the money to work on my exhaust, i'm seriously looking to get it fixed in a week or two...
i'm going to change my oil tomorrow, to find where the leak is and go from there...
i assume i just start the car when it's cold and look for where exhaust is coming from...
i'm pretty sure it's up by my cat, but i need to make sure...
once i find it though, i'm not totally sure where to go from there...

im going theu the EXACT same situation you are bro. luckily my gf's mom got me what i want for christmas, a flowmaster 40 series with dual tips. ive been quoting a few places on custom exhaust, lowest ive gotten was 150 for mandrel bent, and welding my muffler on the end of it.

heh, buy my cat back exhaust direct bolt on and guarenteed to fit, piping no more than 1 year old, 50 bucks.. described as followed:
"2 inch madrel bent cat back with 2 1/4 inline resonator, 2 1/4 inch axle back to a flowmaster 40 with 3 inch non-polished flared tip.. easily replaceable will come off and could probably ship with no problem.. may need some rewelding for shipping purposes, but 50 bucks, i'll sell that too with all the needed hangers"
thats obviously not including shipping, but i could get an estimate with in a week for ya as far as tone, it's deeper than any protege cat-back i've heard in person.. not too ricey... but unbearable over 60 mph just like any cat-back exhaust would sound. and if you don't want the muffler, i'll offer the same price on just the piping, except the shipping will be cheaper
                      peace

i have to take a look at it once i get it unbolted, but due to irregular package size, might be in a few pieces.. etc etc
