    Uh-oh.

So I start the car to move it out of the garage and let it warm up a minute, and notice an odd clanking noise. Pop the hood, and trace the sound to the crank pulley, which is wobbling as it spins. Shut the car off, discovered I could move the crank pulley bolt with my fingers. Removed the bolt completely (which took no real effort), noticed a bunch of rust (had tapped/cleaned the bolt before I put the motor together) but it was not stripped, so I put it back in and torqued it. Restarted the motor long enough to notice that the clanking is gone, but the wobble is still there.

    How screwed am I?

(Car is coming back in the garage in a week after I am done moving and I will be tearing it apart, I'd just like to know if anyone's seen this before...)

I can picture the crank bolt holding the toothed timing gear snug...then the belts pulley goes on this ...A machinist would know what to do...depending how loose the threads are ( i don't wanna just say "loctite" or a fancy jerry rig)...you may have to get to the flywheel starter teeth to "ground" the crank with a prybar then torque that "big" bolt...good luck

sooo, bolt torqued down, and pulley wobble. you're fcked. new pulley, likely a new crank too. did you pull it and check to make sure it didn't damage the keyway? I'll bet it did.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

before jumping to conclusions take the pulley off and see if there is any crap stuck between it and the crank sprocket that is making it wobble.

Mating surfaces were both clean, except for a dusting of rust (?!?) that was not there when I put the motor back together in January. Crank key is obviously damaged, especially when compared to a clean spare (which, dashing my hopes, would not fit in the keyway).

It appears that a parting out thread is in my future.

was the spare key for the correct type of crank?

i have a big nose crank w/ pulley and key about 5 feet from where i'm sitting right now

Yeah, the spare key was from Pat's 93, which would make it a big nose, IIRC. Keys look exactly the same (well, excluding the wear), at least.

From reading on Miata.net, some of those guys use Loctite 660 to hold the key in place while they slide the crank sprocket on, then install the crank pulley bolt with some Loctite 242... it seems like this *might* work for me, but the problem is the Miata crank pulley can be slid over the bolt and ours cannot, and I don't know if I trust the key to stay aligned while I slide the pulley on.

those pics you see are for the short nose crank, the short nose crank BP's are the same way (you can take the pulley all apart and leave the bolt installed).

I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

Well, I was lucky enough to catch it before it wiped most of the keyway out, so if I take the timing belt off and replace the key, crank gear, and pulley bolt, I should be okay. This time I will Loctite the little bastard.
