    Megasquirt on smog tested vehicles

Unfortunatly, the EPA has become big brother and requires my area to do smog testing on all cars under 25 years old...unless you can sell them that your car is a collectors item.

We are fully aware that would be a hard sell with our vehicles.

I currently have a 1991 Escort GT I am putting a GTR engine into. This has been a long drawn out project that has been on the back burner for almost 10 years.

Years ago, I considered looking at an standalone ECU, but the cost was way too high. Now with the Megasquirt, the price is really appealing and is something I really need to think about.

They do not pop the hood or anything. On vehicles older than 1996, they look to see if you have a check engine light on, check for a converter, and then stick a tube up the tail pipe. They drive on a dyno for about 1 mile at 30 MPH under a heavy load.

Is anyone here running a Megasquirt and ALSO have to deal with smog testing? If so, will it pass?

I know if an engine is running good, there is no reason it shouldn't pass. I am just checking to see if this is something that can be done.

If your tune is good, you should have no problems passing emissions. I passed here in Georgia on a Haltech standalone. Haltech, MegaSquirt, etc - they are basically all the same.

        Shameless plug Alex lol!

But Lex will get the job done if you needed one built to pass smog. Give him a PM.

i installed my megasquirt and got it tuned well enough by myself (in about a week, on the street) to get it to pass emissions with no problem on the first try. i had never tuned a car before in my life.

either i'm lucky, i have a knack for this, or the emissions tests are way less stringent than you'd think lol..

Ferdi, which flavor Haltech did you pass smog on? Cuz the 1st gen E6 I'm stuck with in the rallycar absolutely refuses to pass smog. Local guy here is selling his Autronic SMC... I wish I had a spare thousand bucks to spend!

jay, you should seriously consider a megasquirt... mine has been nothing but reliable, plus it has a big support base and great tuning resolution (especially on MS2).

oh yeah and its cheap :D

If you don't have a pw resolution better than 0.1ms you will have a hard time passing on 550cc injectors or larger

                  Trying to understand everything now.

I would be interested in using a Megasquirt2 on my GTR install.

What price are we talking. I want reliability first, performance second. I want to know I can hop in it and run anytime I want. The car is my secondary ride.

I want room to add larger injectors, if I choose, also the ability in increase boost as much as the turbo will allow with little trouble.

                  Follow me?

I need it idiot proof. I am far from an idiot, but unless I have it hands on, I have trouble understanding stuff. I learn the best when my hands are getting dirty.

What costs are we looking at?

I would go with a megasquirt if I saw that it was tough enough to handle rally. I've only heard of a couple teams running them and at least one has had nothing but trouble, with vibrations breaking the poor thing. I haven't ruled MS out though. If I had any sense I'd run one in the street car and put the Link in the rallycar....

jay, have a look at microsquirt. its a MS2 in a nice small compact package, like haltech or the like. i think it came out already, if not its coming out soon.

There is a surface mount version of the MS board that has low profile components specifically designed to handle vibrations. Furthermore, if you are looking for a vibration resistance solution, I can certainly make some suggestions into building one that is fairly bulletproof using potting methods.

Unfortunatly/fortunatly I had a tree fell on my 1996 Escort GT just after Christmas this year. This is both a curse and a blessing.

Just a little background, I got my 1996 Escort GT on eBay in 2002 or 2003 for $1731.00 and the insurance company gave me about $2,500.00 (subtract $250.00 for the deductable and $100.00 to keep the car) for it.
This is going to benefit my friend David and myself.

Anyways, I now have the cash to finish my project now. It will not be until spring before I start, but as someone that lives in a snow area, spring is right around the corner.
