    time slips and gear ratios

okay so i'm trying to do a little analysis of my times... figure out why i'm so slow now. i think its because of the gearing... mainly 4th (which i was a little worried would be too tall...).

    old gears (1-4):
    4.105 fd
    3.31
    1.833
    1.31
    1.03

    new gears:
    3.85 fd
    3.31
    1.833
    1.23
    .914

    here's some timeslips

    best old slip:
    60- 1.971
    330- 5.451
    1/8- 8.226
    mph- 87.31
    1000-10.604
    1/4- 12.611
    mph- 111.27

    2nd best old slip:
    60- 2.04
    330- 5.654
    1/8- 8.475
    mph- 87.18
    1000-10.892
    1/4- 12.926
    mph- 109.93

best new slip (i made 13 runs on saturday):
    60- 2.153
    330- 5.845
    1/8- 8.76
    mph- 85.95
    1000-11.22
    1/4- 13.309
    mph- 110.15

    i know my 60's sucked but with a 2.36 60' last year i ran a 13.25, and with a 2.10 i ran a 13.15. last year it took a horrendous 2.60 to bump me back to a 13.7.... but this weekend i did a 13.64 with a 2.27 60 foot.

argghhhh. the tune is the same, tires are the same, tire pressure is the same (15 psi). the only difference is in the tranny... the quaife and taller gears.

i dropped my pressure later in the day (a few runs after my 13.309 run) to 12psi hoping to hook up better... it didnt help, it just dropped my trap speed to 107 (consistantly).

i also made some 1/8th runs last year, crossing the finish on the revlimiter in 3rd. i trapped consistantly 87mph... so with the old gearing i was shifting out of 3rd at mid track. with the new gears i dont leave 3rd till almost 95...

any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated... but i think i'm going to need to tear it apart again

your going to be slower, your now turning the gears slower than before. simple math.

now what the new gear set does do is allow you to add more power so you run thru the gears faster but dont hit redline in 4th at such a low speed.

you need more power. taller gears = room for more power. You must comply.
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

true, the 12 second time slips happened in october. i would have preferred a hotter day though... it was kinda cool and foggy all day on saturday so the track never really warmed up. combine that with the 200 stock civics doing john force style burnouts and well.. you know how it goes.

Try some simple things like icing the intercooler at first. Also shift before redline, the motor doesn't have that much power at 7k RPM. Bump your psi to around 20 instead of 18 and it should do the trick.

with the taller gears, shifting early is going to hurt me i think.... thats one variable i forgot to mention. i was shifting at ~7200 last year (7300 limiter)... saturday i was shifting at ~6800 and occasionally tapping the limiter, because thats what i have it set at for street driving. i had lost the power wire for my laptop so i couldnt change any MS settings.

i'm not sure icing the intercooler would work that well... what would you suggest? maybe have a friend hit it with canned air right before my burnout or something? my intercooler is huge so i dont think my IAT is a problem.. i'll log it on a hot day sometime though to see.

i could pick up some sort of pump and rig up some piping for my air/water intercooler i guess... i dont think i sold that thing, i dont even remember. i'll have to see if its in my dads garage lol. running one of those full of ice water could certainly help...

On a turbo car intake temps make a huge difference. Even lowering them a few degrees. What boost are you at now?

Hey mate, I've stuck with the 4.105 final drive for my car and I've achieved a 12.168 PB 1/4mile. Here's is a little thing I have with all my gear ratios and info inputed for you. One major difference with me though, is that I shift at 6400rpm. Anything over that and the dyno shows the power dropping off, so that's why i shift at what you would call early. But, as you can see by my time, it works.

Slip details can be seen here.
