    steve's FMIC setup

Alright well the kit came in the mail on thursday while I slept. I went straight out when my wife informed me i had a package to find it, after cleaning up my pants i tore into the package to look at the contents. After looking the kit over i put it back in the box and forgot about it....

TILL TODAY, I needed some parts from u pull it and mazda. Before i forget (it may be common knowlage already) but the miata intake maniold gasket does NOT work on the protege . So tomorrow i have to run to mazda to get the correct gasket so as to get my intake manifold bolted up.

I got home and after some sleep and a trip to the dog park (the poor pooch just doesnt have enough room to stretch at home) i got to work on the ride. In that time i tried fitting the pipe from the intercooler toward the throttle body again. Its looking like it will be a kinda tight fit but it tucked up nicer than i thought it did during the first fitting. I need to lower my intercooler and actually get the pipe bolted up.

right now im just in the fitment stage but will hopefully have the car up and running by the end of this weekend.

off topic but here is my intake manifold, and where im at...

    failed attempt at intercooler mounting

    and a little bov w/ A/C fitment

Ill work on pictures this evening (i need sleep, been up about 22 hours now)... I decided to paint my intake manifold, should have done it while i was waiting on parts... its baking in the oven right now to help it cure but it prevents me from really mocking it up tonight.

EDIT: pictures added to #1 post

Looks like you "may" need Escort A/C stuff. The routing of the Ford gear is a little bit different.

You must have bought/received the wrong year Miata intake manifold gasket. If the bolt holes lined up, but the port holes were too high, then you got the 99-00 intake manifold gasket. If the entire gasket was just too narrow, then you got the one from a 1.6.

thanks for the compliment... i started polishing it with the intention of painting the lower half and basically just leaving the plenum polished... i decided i didnt have the correct tools to polish it quick enough and it was not worth the 4 hours it was going to take so i said to hell with it and painted the whole thing, i used the wrinkle finish as i have a couple valve covers done in it and i really do like the finish (not using one of those v/c's though i like the more factory look. plus with a half smooth and half rough intake i figured the wrinkle would cover up the differences and it did a great job!

as for the intercooler setup... I realized today the tow hooks are a 2 pc design (stupid me) i only took off the eyelet itself (that extends to the top of the frame rail, there is another that bolts to the back of the piece i removed under the frame rail. That gave me all the room i need.

As for the airconditioning, i want to stay as far away from the ford stuff as possible. Ive blown up the line that runs infront of the turbo before (then hearing after the fact its decently common if you run your ac) and I want to give a different setup a try.

with it now fitting the way it should the bov does rest against the ac line. Ill have to figure something out with that.

on a side note the corksport vj20 outlet flanges are on back order till the 28th. That may be what keeps this car from running till then as i dont really have the budget to pay an exhaust shop to getto rig something AND pay corksport when they get the goods Ill have to see if my father in law can bail me out with some steel work.

thanks, i made sure to take my time and get a nice heavy coat on. then i threw it in the oven to help it cure. It looks really good in person too!

Im having some serious tranny issues, I think its stuck in 5th gear so im going to take it apart enough to get the 5th gear cover off and cross my fingers i can solve the issue *BEGS TO CAR GODS* this car is about to be put on the back burner... Im in over my head with stress right now, Im coming up on the finish line (school) when i will have NO extra money... At the same time i dont want to go into school with NO money id rather have a small surplus to buffer the transition and this car is taking my buffer REALLY fast. This is burning me out. I have NEVER had problems like this and its got me scratching my head as to wtf the deal is. i have not had a SINGLE productive day that i wasnt running in circles, taking crap back apart, putting it back together, then taking it apart again. im worn out....

Take a break and make up your mind which car to keep. With more than 1 car, you have too many ideas, too many possibilities and with a limited budged, that's what happens, you run in circles and can't decide. Leave it alone as is, make yourself a daily plan and when you are mentally ready, tackle it.

I'm sure there is nothing wrong with your tranny, you are just panicking because of all the stress so leave it, a solution will show up by itself, without you bothering about it.

Anyways, keep up the good work and good luck with school, that is what's important now.

yeah thanks for the support guys, i have never been more frusterated! with my cars, the 4wd is not really a project and i could never see letting it go. some day it will be a project but now i just dont have the money. I dont spend any time on it its just an empty 4wd shell and thats how it will sit for a while.

as for the tranny, 5th gear is stuck for sure. today i got off early (only worked 9 hours) so i should have some time to get the 5th gear cover off and inspect my work. hopefully i will see the error in my ways! I also need to run by an exhaust shop and try to get the stuff to build a compressor outlet adaptor for the vj20. I need to do that, bleed the clutch... oh yeah replace my timing belt, then cross my fingers!

realisitically i would probably be willing to sell the 4wd IF i put it back together and sold it as a running car for what a running car is worth. I paid 1600 ish (maybe 1650 cannot remember maybe it was 1700) and i cannot see striking a match to 1700 dollars.. id like to at least pocket 1200 out of it. I think ill keep an eye open for a protege the same color for a parts car and reassemble the car then i can put it up forsale and actually get some money out of it.
