    My B6DE swap into 323

So here's the first post in my swap story. I hope the thread ends well

There's a relatively low mileage 1994 MX-3 4 cyl DOHC sitting in the junkyard, just waiting to be pillaged. A couple of questions:

    • This is the B6DE code engine with 107-ish horsepower, correct? (My hunch is, Yes. Don't want to make a similar mistake as last weekend's mess-up - see below )
    • This is the easiest swap into my 1990 323 with the B6, engine, right? (Again, my gut says, Yes)

    • Going to need the MX3 engine mounts, I know. Anything else that wouldn't match up? I'll grab the throttle body for ease.
    • Will I need the MX3 ECU? How much of the wiring loom will I need? Are the disconnection points in the engine-side of the firewall?
    • Does the MX3 transmission have different gearing? (My Super-Intiutiveness fails me here, but I hope the answer is yeas ) I know my 323 trans is strong, but it has VERY short gearing. No tach yet, but at above 140 km/h (90 mph) the little-engine-that-could is winding very high. I don't have an issue with grabbing the donor's tranny, but just would like to know if its different.

    • If replacing trans, will the 323's clutch hydraulics and gear shift linkages mate up and work? No problems using my 323's half-shafts?

Oh Yeah! This is going to be fun!
    Bart

[Funny story: I accidentally grabbed an engine and trans from a 1993 MX-3 last weekend, thinking it was the higher HP model. Oops. At least I now have a lot more experience removing an engine ]

The friend and I who have started this project have little fabrication experience and no engine swap experience - we thought this would be a good way to get our feet wet and still get about 30% more power.

I know lots have gone the B6 to BP route, but I'd read in a lot of places that the B6DE is a very well-built engine and, if it is easier, would be perfect for the ol' Three-twenty-three

message suzuka...i think there's a bit more to his screen name. he did a b6de swap on his 323.

as far as i know, it would involve wiring harness, ecu, air meter, brake booster lines, heater core hoses maybe?

i'd definately replace all the vac lines and coolant lines, and do a gasket job on it before installing it.

you can run your 323 transmission, i'd swap your flywheel/clutch combo over if it's in better shape than the b6de engine. all the engine mounts are the same. the only one that MIGHT be different, is the rear mount.

i'd also grab a front sway bar from a protege gt, escort gt, or 97+escorts. your 323 doesn't come stock with one.

let me know if there's anything else, it's basically a BP swap lol.

**** it - BP time, baby!

**** it - I found a BP with low mileage and grabbed it. Also grabbed the harness, fuse box (did I need it?), ECU, alternator, air meter, transmission, shift linkage and that long bar that runs along side the shift linkage (what's that called? is it for stiffening?).

All this was from an Escort GT. I still need an axle, right? Which one? Or both?

I need to replace my muffler, too. It's got about a 1-1/4" outlet on it. Must be some kind of Midas Economizer special. What's the stock inlet pipe size? Must have bigger!

Rear disc conversion will be next on the list. Oh yeah. Love the junkyard!

HOLY SIHT, though - huge weight difference between the B6 and BP! I'm going to be a little (a lot) nose-heavy! Oh well, a little more rotation never hurt anything - except the rear bumper and a few guard rails.

if you use the EGT tranny you need both axles. i'd recommend adding a front sway bar from the EGT as well since your 323 doesn't have one.

I think a sway bar is a fine idea while I've got everything apart - I'll take a look this weekend at the wrecker for either models.

Does anyone have any idea if an Escort GT muffler will match up to my 323's stock exhaust? My little pinhole muffler is going to be coming off, too. I saw a decent shape tandem exit muffler on an EGT the last time I was there. It'd be worth the 10 bucks if it fits

323/mx3 are the same length. escort/protege are a bit longer.

So the swap is done! I'll try to write up as much as possible when I have the chance, but I'm currently waiting for wifey to get ready so that i can get a ride to the car wash where I left it. Once it cools I'll hose 'er down and go for a restrained burn.

Biggest head scratcher we had was when it wouldn't start and the ECU started smoldering - literally. It turned out the Haynes manual had the firing order REALLY ****ed up and toasted a resistor on the ECU. Once the firing order was corrected, it lit up! I initially started it using the burned ECU, just in case that wasn't the problem (I didn't want to mess up a second one). I "purchased" another ECU out of a different EGT at the junkyard and used that for the permanent install.

After the old engine was removed, we also spent the extra 15 minutes dropping the sub-frame so I could install the EGT front sway bar. That would have saved a lot of time if I had remembered to install the sway bar frame bushings before we reconnected the subframe and dropped the engine on it. With a little bit of luck and pain we got them bolted up, though.

It was a lot of fun! Can't wait to coax 'er into going a little faster

                              Another ECU burning!

Okay - big problems with the swap. This is the second ECU that has started to smolder. The first one started doing this right away and had fried a resistor attached to PIN C. The 2nd one just started after about an hour of driving.

Does anyone know what pin C is connected to? I'm going to check the second ECU (currently installed) and verify that's the same component that is blown. I'm going to disconnect whatever wire is feeding it and hope it still runs until I can get this sorted out.

                              Crap.

                              I'm overheating too.
