    low speed vibration

alright, this is my first non-fwd vehicle so bear with me

i've got a fairly noticeable vibration whenever i accelerate hard at low speeds. its between like 15-20mph, and then its gone. feels somewhat like a bad cv joint but it doesnt seem to have anything to do with turning... the front cv's are new.

i'm thinking... rear cv axle? harmonic in the driveshaft or out of balance driveshaft?

Go under the car and grab the rear shaft right where it comes outta the trans. Grab it like you wanna choke it to death (should come easy, that) and make damn sure there's no play. If there is, you have an output bearing about to go. Next thing to check would be rear halfshafts, another thing you might do is jack up both ends and put it in gear and crawl under there looking for bent stuff. A bent driveshaft will make lotsa vibes but usually at higher speeds.

i'll be sure to check that stuff out... the output shaft bearing could easily be suspect, i think i drained the original (120k) gear lube out of there . its full of fresh fluid now but i'm sure some damage was done, it was pretty nasty looking. oh yeah the gearbox itself was over a quart low out of 2.8 quarts LOL. i topped it off at first, and then changed it completely when i had a chance. unfortunately the fresh fluid didnt help the 5th gear grind... it only goes in if you double clutch and match the revs perfectly.

luckily i have a gtx trans and BP ready to go in when i am ready or if anything breaks.... hopefully the former lol

The transfer case and the trans have seperate sumps. There is a seal between them. You should have drained two and filled two. This is not obvous from the outside becuse it is a single casting. But if you drained the transfer case and filled the trans: bad things will be happening. . .

oh, dont worry i know that

i topped off the fluid in the tranny right away, because of the 5th gear grind... then about a week later i drained and filled the rear end, rear transfer, and gearbox.

I had the same problem after I rebuilt the driveshaft on my car. Installed new U-joints and carriers, put it in the car and vibration. Took it to a drive shaft shop, got it back and no vibration. I even made sure to keep the time of the carriers and U-joints the same as when I took it apart, and it turned out to be a balance issue with the hole thing

              hmm

it sat for a while (2 years), so i'm thinking maybe one side of the driveshaft (bottom) got rustier than the rest and threw it off?

Yeah my car sat for at least 5 years, so I didn't even trust it anyway so I never tried it before I rebuilt it. I know when I had the vibration, it was mainly when you would take off and change gears in lower rpm's.
