    freakin corners

so the other day I was out helping a friend look for a job and I myself was in the process of finding another job, when all of a sudden it starts to rain....not a lot but just enough to make the road slippery. I was going 23 mph in second when the car hydroplaned and hit a concrete median. SO I was real glad to have full coverage and tow on my insurance lol. Needless to say, come this next week I'll know if the car is totaled. I've put a little over $2,000 in the car and its value is about $1,700. I hope the insurance company doesn't screw me. I did manage to keep ALL reciepts of work performed and parts costs. Thank god that I replaced both half shafts a few months ago and they have a limited warrenty. The drivers side halfshaft is a freebie. The rest of the damaged parts are the Dunlop sport tire which is $93.00 to replace, and a mazda daisy 14'' rim at the cost of $35.00. So the total so far is $127.00 with out any labor cost added. Now I just need to see how much a SHOCK TOWER & FRONT SWAY BAR will cost as I can only get these from a junk yard or dealership. My mechanic says they are prob gonna total the car but I just can't see why they would do such a thing for so little damage. I'm supposibly looking at $1,000 to fix. So do I buy it back for a beater and fix it, sell it or just give up all hope????

I could personally never deal with a "reconstructed title" on a project of mine. and yes when you have to spend 59% of the cars value to repair it (no matter how small the damage is) it will probably be totaled. thats the problem with older cars that you modify, for street use its awesome boom, someone hits you, you crash, whatever and you get a nice check, and screw the car you didnt really care about it in the first place, free money... but when you have parts and time invested into a car it is disgusting how easy it is to loose a project to a minor fender bender.

Buy it back and part it out. When I got into my wreck the ins company charged me 12 bux to buy it back and gave me 1600 for the car and 130 for the baby seat.

the difference between liability and full coverage on my volvo is like 5-10 bucks a month. yes in a year that is 60-120 bucks but that is such an insignificant amount of money for the lack of stress you have to deal with. not to mention you get in an accident when you dont have the money to get a new car and because YOU caused the accident you didnt get a penny now you have an accident on your record and no money to get another car... insult to injury, you now dont have any car. there is nothing wrong with full coverage.

Its was about $50 a month more for the 2nd gen before it was "totaled".

And had he been setting aside the extra he'd been paying instead of giving it to the insurance company he could of fixed the damages with out informing them and saving him the trouble of having a car with a salvage title. Something that makes what little value the car has even more insignificant.

Like everyone has said already, insurance companies don't care about our old cars no matter what and it will most likely be totaled.

Before insurance even sees it I highly suggest prying off the "accessories" you have attached to the car (hood scoop, shopping list, "wind diffusers") to try and optimize the amount of the insurance payoff. They'll care even less about your car with that stuff on there. Basically make it look as clean/stock as you can so they don't think you were abusing the car when this happened.

On a side note relating to the air diffuser, the Lancer Evolution comes with one as an option for one reason and one reason only: The diffuser redirects air that would normally flow down the back window and over the trunk lid onto the top of the gigantic wing on the trunk to help increase the functionality of the wing and provide downforce. What the "diffusers" on your car are doing, if anything at all, would be the same effect except with no gigantic wing there to "catch" the air and force the rear of the car down.

So, yeah, cars that are NOT STI's or EVO's should never need to worry about having a wind diffuser on their roof unless they have a gigantic wing and are going 100+MPH on a track.

so in 2 years when he gets tired of the car it gets sold as "clean car check carfax" that has NO information on any accident... good!?

what does your driving record look like? I say that because my cousin has a 2 gen escort that is fully insured and it was 15 dollars a month more than liability.

and i would like to see your bank statements so see how much money you have saved up, as on paper but 99 people out of 100 do not have the self control to keep that money saved up. there is a reason why americans on average spend more money than they make and its not by putting all their money in a savings account and filling up their credit cards. they have no savings. so yes if you have the self control to do that, by far, hell save and save and save and become independantly insured, screw the insurance companys... but until then its not a bad idea to be fully covered.

your just like all those idiots on the infomercials who are like "you can be rich like me". this is the real world, accidents happen when you dont want them to, when your not ready... this is no car accident but my cousin bought furniture like a 2400 dollar microfiber livingroom set, it was differed payments with no interest for 6months... so 6 months later they have the money to pay for it and... wha... taxes and his wife screwed them (as did mine) her job didnt take enough taxes out combine with his salary so they ended up paying mr. bush instead of macy's

**** happenes... that is the point of insurance, their pockets are MUCH deaper than yours and 1 in a thousand need those deep pockets but you dont know who that person is till its you in a bloody mess in an accident YOU caused.

                    Here my current bank statement.
It look pretty good considering I just drop 1k on an attorney and payed my bills for last month.
Would you like to see my e-trade portfolio?
                    Or my CD's?
                    paypal balance?
or the amount of money I have in my wallet?

I pay 550 a year on my ranger and the BG. I just hit the major insurance price drop. And I've never been convicted of a traffic violation. Cited yes, convicted no.

I know this, I wouldn't have full insurance on a car that looks like this.

he'd be lucky to even get a 1k for it from them.

read all the comments, and to answer......I pay'd nothing for the car...$0.00. I did make it a ecomical ride due to the gas prices. I had planned to keep the car for a few years or so. Down the road I would have just used it as a "toy" instead of my daily. Car's value as stated again is est. at $1,700 and so even after the mod cost of $2,000.........the total would be est. at $3,700 and if you were to take half that, I would or anyone would expect to see about $1,850. I would not be suprised to get a check for $1,000 but if it does come down to that, I can buy the car back and fix it with the remaining money. It all comes down to tuesday, when they actually come to the car and see the damage. What crap to deal with for a less than 20mph wreck. I will def sell the parts if it is totaled beyond repair (I.E. the frame may be twisted.) Now as per the air diffusers lol, I did it just and only just for looks.....btw...I do drive over 100mph at least once every week and no it was not the cause of the wreck. I'll keep it updated.

CD's is not money you can just go grab... to me it looks like right now would not be a good time for you to cause an accident as you only have 700 dollars + whats in your wallet to purchase and transfer the title on a replacement vehicle.

you just proved my point. thats great your putting money away for the future, and the "i just paid my attorney 1k last month" again goes to prove my point, ish happens and yes you had enough money to pay for a replacement then bills and an attorney came up last month. If you posted that up and your savings had 5k in it and you said "and i paid my attorney last month" i would say ive been proven wrong, but you showed me bank accounts that realistically have hardly any money in them (i make that in 1 week right now and if we ever get busy again i make 1100+ a week).

If i cause an accident and actually total my car I have a truck. I have a car that would be on the road if it had seat belts. And a car that would run if had a motor put in it. And a car that I would own outright if the legal system ****ing worked. And a ford probe still. Because no one wants to buy the damn thing.

There's no point in keeping money in a savings acount. its like what 2%(actual)interest at best. That's barely keeping up with inflation.

I keep 1k in my checking and savings combine so I don't have to pay for checks. Saying all my vheicles get struck by lightning I can cash out my meager stock collecion(****ing yahoo merger falling thru rubbish) and buy a new base model hyundai.

The point is unless you're insuring the car with mods(which cost +$$$) theres no point in full insurace on a car worth 1000-2000. If you don't wreck it in more than ~12 months you'd of been better off kicking the money into an oline savings acount 5%apr or just putting it under the matress.

OP has a realist view on his car. And I commend him for it.

His car is probaly going to be totaled though, for what could be fixed by a quick trip to the junkyard and a rim and tire.
