    Theredrocket's GTR Swap Thread

Hey guys. I don't post too much on the forums. I'm more of a lurker I guess. (I do post a little more over on FEOA) But I figured I should post this up, as I'm sure alot of you would like to see it.

First off, I own a 91 escort GT. It is my first car. A few years ago, me, my dad, my brother and my cousin flew to B.C. for a few days in the summer to see some relatives. A few days before going, I was checking around for escort GT's for sale, as I always wanted one. I found on in B.C. Long story short, after emails and phone calls back and forth, I bought it from him. We met the guy in B.C, and the escort was mine. So I got to see some relatives, AND come home with a "new" car.

I knew the car wasn't gonna stay stock for long. My dad was always harcore into modifying all his cars, so it was kind of in my blood. So, I parked it for the winter in the garage, and I went nuts modifying it. I dropped in a full GTX setup, went crazy on the suspension, did brake work, etc...
I have a thread about the whole deal over on FEOA

Here's a few pics after the suspension/GTX install

    The Red Rocket

The Engine Bay with the GTX installed

Well, that was all fine and dandy, but then the next winter I fluked out and discovered a GTR on ebay. It came with the full motor, ecu, harness, injectors etc... Haha, I didn't need no convincing. I bought it.

And that is where this thread will begin. I refreshed the GTR over the winter, and swapped it in over a few weeks in the summer. I have lots of pics to post, so they won't be going up all at once as I don't want to sit at the computer for hours posting pictures. But over the course of a few days I'll get em' up.

Also, feel free to make comments, or if you have questions, or suggestions, post em' up or PM me.

                in the beginning

Well, I'll start posting up some pictures. This was the GTR in the beginning stages. It was pretty dirty when I got it. These are some pictures of it the first night I got it. I put it on a stand and started tearing into it

I replaced basically every seal and gasket on the motor, got a new water pump, timing belt kit, new belts etc etc..

                    Cleaning things up

Here's some pictures of GTR as I was cleaning it up. I didn't want to strip it right down to clean everything perfectly. So I basically just blasted everything with engine degreaser, and got into the knooks and crannies with a little dental pick, to get the crap dug out. I tidied up all the mating surfaces and painted a few random things like the thermostat housing and oil dipstick tube.

New timing belt kit, water pump, cleaned the crud up. (I replaced the rusty bolts too after this pic was taken)

                    Cleaned up front of motor

                    Cleaned up back of motor

                    Cleaned up side of motor

                      More cleanup

Well, as I started cleaning things up, I kept finding more things that I wanted cleaned/painted etc...I originally just wanted to wash it all down, but seeing dirty/rusty/scuffed up stuff started bugging me. So I went nuts.

                      Various painted pieces

                      More painted stuff

I went for broke and took all this stuff to be powdercoated/ceramic coated

This is how the intake manifold looked when I started

This is how pieces of the turbo looked when I started

                        Comin' together

I about crapped my pants when the guy showed me my stuff that he had powdercoated and ceramic coated. IMO it came out SWEET.

The intake manifold all reassembled. If you look in the few posts above, you can see how ugly it was at the start

Here's the vj-23 all reassembled and such

                        Cool view of the vj-23

The vj-23 is QUITE a bit larger than the vj-20, as you can see in this picture (Keep the "nerd" and "you need to tan" jokes to yourself haha)

Lol, yah. My buddy took that picture of me looking at the finished vj-23. Ha, he was like "oh crap man, look at this picture!" The angle he got makes it look outrageously huge.
