on my distributor there is little black square that is held on by a phillips head screw. what does that do? i have had it disconnected since i got the car. i plugged it in and three hours and an autocross later my plugs, wires, distributor and rotor were gone.

It's almost always better to have something plugged in than not, I know what you are talking about but not what it does. Go buy some BKR7Es a new cap and rotor and Magnecor wires and you should be fine. When my cap and rotor were toast I blew a coil and 3 sets of plug wires in less than 2000 miles.

All that does is reduce/eliminate RF interference. Can't imagine why it would have hurt anything by connecting it,

Removing it or disconnecting it will cause there to be high pitch frequency whine over your radio that will get higher as RPM's rise. Depending on your ears sensitivity... you may not even notice it.
