    Roadrace EGT Touring Car

Ok, I finally got around to starting the new racecar project. It's going to be for the US Touring Car Championship. An EGT with a BPT and a widebody kit/ lots of aero aids/ and as lite as humanly possible. We started with a $200 92', stripped it and acid dipped it.

We then put it on a rotiserrie and seam welded the whole chassis-

After that an FIA style rallycage was built tying in all the suspension/strut mounting points

After getting the bulk of the welding done, we painted the underbody with some metal etching primer, then a gloss white paint-

We started installing the drivers office equipment, moving the seat/shifter/pedal assembly back 10"-

Along the way we created some tubular crossmembers to relocate some of the suspension (see the suspension section thread---we may sell some of these parts!)

It seems like it's been taking forever to do this stuff but we really just started a few months ago, and we're just starting to really get going. It won't be long before the suspension gets mounted and it's rolling! I've posted this on some of the escort forums, but thought it would be cool to get more input/ideas over here!

I forgot to post the website that I've just redone---www.piercemotorsports.com---if you go into the roadrace section under PTE escort you can find pics of the old car.

Jaw just dropped through floor! All I can say is wow. Thats awesome work!
I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

surprising you kept the radiator support frame. things flimsy as hell. then again anything beyond the struts flexing has very little effect on the chassis.

          also

long steering column will be long.

Thanks guys!!! The work is very labor intensive---it's about 30 hours to take the car apart and get ready for acid dipping. The acid dip costs about $1200-$2000 depending on how much of the undercoating you want gone.

The cage is what we do at the shop everyday so that's the easy part for us. The DOM material is about $4.00 a foot and there's about 120ft in a FIA style cage. I get about $3000 labor to do that cage in a stripped out shell (I can do custom cages for about $1200 that are NASA/SCCA legal, just not as involved) and then it's about $500 to seam weld the shell (not a lot of time involved, but very time consuming so you don't warp everything).

I guess if someone brought me a clean escort, I could get it to this point in about a month and would cost between $7-$8k. That's a ton of money to spend on the average streetcar, but for the race car guys it's doable. It costs the same amount whether it's a Ferrari, Porsche, Mazda, Ford, Subaru, Mitsu etc...The total finished project will cost about $10k (my cost) plus about 600 hours of my time.

                  Very impressive so far Jim.

How much do you estimate the car will weight once completed?

Thanks guys! There is a lot of work going into this particular project, but this is not the norm for club racing. This build is similar to a world challenge car or FIA touring car, less the engine/trans development (they spend like $250k a year for motor/trans!). I build club cars all the time for less than $10k and you can buy a used car for sometimes less than $5k...my white escort with the bpt that led the Western Endurance Racing Championship last year is for sale for $6.5k with a good spares package. All post some more photo's of the interior with steering next week.

JHO---I'm hoping for just under 2000lbs, like 1985lbs. I built a black EGT that came in under 2k but didn't do the acid dip, and remove as much of the interior. The body/ground effects on this car are more complex---it'll look like a DTM car with rockerpanels and big wheel arch's. The car will have to weigh 2280 with me and a empty fuel tank so I'm hoping for at least 100lbs of ballast in the passenger seat area.

I've seen your pics of the rear subframe over on FEOA, and I really like this project a lot!! seeing the acid-dipped and caged pictures is a cool way to see the progress of a build of this caliber. I'm looking forward to more photos as you progress, especially with the bodywork you'll be doing with those DTM-style wheel arches, etc. What size tire do you think you'll be running? Will you still be using the escort hubs, or modding them to something different? Will the seat being 10" further back affect visibility?

We're going to run 17x9's when we run in the wercs series and 17x8's for the US touring car stuff---I plan on being able to run 10" rims- but won't have the HP to turn them. We've gotten the stock hubs to go 54 race hours without issues so I'm hoping to get 25 hours out of the stock hubs now with the increased weight/size---if not then we'll upgrade---probably be asking you for your idea's!!

Yes I will build traction bars for the BG's-I've had a few serious people ask now so this week I'll look into it. I just pulled the motor/trans out of my car but am hoping that won't be an issue in the design---I'm worried about some of your intercooler piping though---I left mine in the car so hopefully I can mock up around that. I'll be asking for everyone's input/ideas this week on this thread as I get further...I'm thinking about using the tow hook bolts for the crossmember...we'll see
