    Rally setup help....

    Hi guys I am preping a 1990 4wd bg with a gtx for my first official rall season....

    Since I am the only one around I know who is rallying with a Mazda I was wondering if I could get some input from you guys, what kind if setup you have, any tricks you could give me, to do or not to do....

    Right now the setup is stock gtx ( sidemount intecooler ) 3inch exhaust 10-12 psi good set of michelins for gravel and suspension wise coilover conversion ( 225 front 220 back ) on bilstein front and tokico back... and good ebc pads front and back on slotted and cross drilled...

    Whoa... so there's gonna be one other Open class protege on this continent. Which flavor gtx, BF or BG?

      It's a BG (BPT) the car in my signature is the first one i bought, but it was way too rusted so I took off all the parts, sold the body and bought a almost rust less new 1990 4wd protege that I am now preparing for the next rally......

        Try Porterfield R4E pads, especially if you're still running the stock calipers. There are big brake upgrades that should be done if you haven't done them already. My car is still runnning a stock rad, with a pair of flexalite fans. I may need to upgrade when we start getting more torque outta this engine though. Your GTX prolly ran michelin 14-62-15's, and those will work, but you should have enough room under the prot's coachwork for larger tires. I used BFG's equivalent to the mich. 16-52's, and am now getting rid of all my small michelins. Tons more grip.

          Your springs sound way too soft for the weight of the car, at least in the front. I would have thought more like 300-325 in front, 200-225 in the rear for most US rally roads. Also, make sure your springs have plenty of travel, don't limit your suspension by the spring. 12" long springs or 14" in the rear would work best. I run Porterfield R4 in the front and Hawk HP in the back of my Escort (I think, I would have to check). The reasoning, was to get more bite in the back to help rotate the FWD car, which I would think would be even harder in an AWD car. If fuel and brake hard lines are still under the car, get good protection over them. I find that a decent front skip plate is critical, especially when I was a new driver, lots of panic stopping tends to drop the front end into rock piles a lot.
