    Trailer hitch for 91 GT

    Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone has installed a trailer hitch on their first gen Protege? If so was it easy?

I just got a small trailer and it should come in handy for camping and moving the bike around etc....

Any way, does anyone have any pictures or maybe some tips or anything?

    Thanks again for any help...

The local junkyard has a Escort GT with a trailer hitch. I will go and check it out to see how everything is bolted up. I imagine it shouldn't be too tough.

            I'm a GSX-F owner, can I play too?

My roomate got a hitch put on at Uhual, he towed a heavy ass car through multiple states with it, seemed more than fine.

i always wanted to get a kickass dirtbike and a single bike trailer, then have my car all rally style, and have the bike and car painted the same. that'd be badass

Sorry I missed this. I just put a trailer hitch on my '90 LX. There is a difference between the '90 and the '91-'94 in that Mazda lowered the tie-down hooks by 3/4" and the commonly available hitches are only for the '91-'94 cars. Basically, there are two hitches available...Dalan makes a non-removable one, and Draw-Tite makes one with a removeable 1 1/4" drawbar.

I put the Draw-Tite on, after drawing two new holes in the hitch, and it worked fine. I just finished dragging a U-Haul sport trailer across country (from LA to Topeka on the southern route...LA->Phoenix->El Paso->Ft.Worth->OK City->Wichita->Topeka...about 1900 miles) and other than a drop in mileage and some slow going up hills (most still pulled in 5th), it worked just fine.

If you want to get a hitch, go to etrailer.com, and go through the list. I'd recommend getting the light converter that runs a separate line from the battery, which reduces the drain on the battery. Due to time constraints, I went with a regular light converter (because trailers don't have separate tail and brake lights). The Sport Trailer also uses LED tail and marker lights, which have a much lower drain than conventional lights.

At the speeds we were driving (75mph or so), I normally get about 27-28 mpg. At the start of the trip, I was getting 23 mpg or so. At the end, mileage was down to about 21 mpg, but outside temp was also right around 0F (we drove all night...1500 miles in 25 hours...we made a lot of stops). I also had just put on new tires (195/55-15 BFG Traction T/As), so the odo reads about 3% low.

Sorry I don't have any pictures, but it does stick down just below the bumper, and you can see the side plates from the side, too. If you go to etrailer, they have the install manual on PDF, and you can get an idea what it looks like. My custom exhaust is also just hitting the hitch, so every once in a while, I'd get a clunk from that.

I'd estimate that the trailer was between 1200-1500 lbs, with another couple hundred pounds in the trunk and back seat.
