    93 EGT stalls

I am the original owner of a 93 Escort GT 5 speed that has had a stalling problem since about 1994. I have been living with it for a long time and have not been able to get any help from Ford or any one. It happens when I am decelerating and the rpm goes bellow 2000 and I push the clutch in. It is very sporadic, it might do it twice in a day then not happen again for a couple of weeks. It sounds like a relay or or a circuit trips when it happens. I can let the clutch out or turn the key and it restarts with no problem. Also I am about to replace the water pump, does any one have any thing to add that the Ford shop manual does not say to do?
    Thanks.

That exact same thing was happening to me for a while, it would usually only happen after being on interstate, it has gone away for now lol.

What the f does that have to do with his problem? Maybe a vacuum leak like the intake tube

Also whats your idle? I've had this problem before also. I just raised my idle to 1000 on my 95 GT and it hasn't done it since. The rpms will drop like 500 and then come back up from 1000. Also it might be the ignition switch. I took mine apart on my 91 GT and cleaned all the contacts inside and it took care of it

I've had this problem with 4 other escorts now.. coincidentially all being U.S cars.

always during decelleration coming off highway ramps.. or gearing down to a stop light.. the rpm drops.. i hear relays in the passenger footwell trip, and the car turns off. when i turn it back on.. it turns on immediately with not a problem at all..

it's done it so frequently in the u.s escorts i've had that i've gotten so used to it i dont wait for it to die anymore.. i just bumpstart halfway thru the stall and it keeps running.

never had this problem with a non u.s car before.

            REALLY weird.

I assume you don't have this problem with the Canadian cars? I have heard that it might be the ignition module but I have not tried to replace it. I guess I can live with it but I am finally getting fed up after 15 years of it. I am a patent man.

I don't have a vacuum leak. I also don't want to go that high on the Idle. I will try the ignition switch though. Thanks

If mine starts acting up again ill replace teh ignition module and let you know if it fixes it. I have a spare one that should still work fine.

                        dirty throttle 90% of it

Did y'all know that the throttle body gets dirty...the air gap becomes inconsistant...the ECU can't compensate for everything...thus stalling as first described in this post.

I have had three Escort GT's now...and cleaning the throttle body solved the idle and stalling problem every time.

Clean it first, I could bet that all of us (90% ???) who have had this problem could have solved it with a simple cleaner.

I switched my car to a 4 wire tps throttlebody and cleaned it in the process so i'll claim that 10% that it doesn't help

Also whats wrong with an idle at 1000? If you have mount inserts or solid mounts it will keep the car smooth and it wont vibrate at idle. Anything under 1000 is shaking.

I had this problem before. It was a small air leak before the VAF. Thats what I would check.

but what I dont get is why it only does it sometimes, actually it very well could be, mine only does it in the summer usually on warmer days, the plastic could be expanding and contracting creating a leak.
