laptop for ms

whats everyone using for a laptop for megasquirt i have been looking for sometime now and cant seem to find anything for all around use cheap on ebay that has a serial port i can buy a brand new laptop for the price some of the people are asking for used laptops

You can use the new laptops and get a USB to serial emulator, sometimes these don't work, but usually do. There is a nice Toshiba laptop that goes for about 450 that has a native serial port on it.

i was thinking of getting the cheaper acer aspire one with the 10" screen

i'm using a compaq armada 1700 that i paid $20 for. it has dual battery bays and runs for nearly 5 hours on a full charge. its heavy and ugly.. looks just as old as it is... i can leave it in the car without fear of it being stolen. perfect.

oh yeah, and it has a native serial port.

i looked all over clist locally and every laptop i see is junk and people want way to much for them and never answer phone or emails

so if im going to pay $300 for something it might as well be new i just hope the usb adapter works

I use an iogear usb to serial adapter with only having to assign the usb device to COM2 on my laptop. I tried 4 before settling on this one, luckly I stock things like this at work

Usually if the usb to serial jack wont work find a multi-port usb jack and plug it in from there and it should work. I have this sprint mobile broadband and it plugs into the usb but it wont recognize it to download the drivers. I had this multi-port usb jack and plug it in to the Notebook and then the sprint wireless usb modem and it worked.

hard to say without testing it, having dedicated drivers is something both my cables to go and iogear units had and both did work. but the iogear one worked first try after setting the port.

looking at the pic its looks the same down to the molded plastic lines so it maybe the same manufacturer, worth a try
