Turbo EGT racing at Cal Speedway

This weekend my customer drove his Turbo escort (my old white car) in NASA's PTB class at Cal Speedway. This was his very first race ever, after succesfully completing the Driving Concepts school just last month. I've been coaching him at a frantic pace the last 6 months getting him up to speed as quick as humanly possible to get him ready to take the school/get him to his first race---what a relief to finally have this one done and over with!!!

Saturday he ran a short practice, qualified 3RD in class, started around 10th overall in the field. He got eaten up at the start, and then worked his way back to the podium, finishing 3rd in class and 6th overall!!

Sunday morning practice went smooth and then we boosted up for qualifing (whopping 9lbs---we usually only give him 4.5lbs...) and he went about 3 seconds faster with the HP, but the field was deeper and he still qualified 3rd/12 overall. Only one RX8 got him at the start and then he held his own, had a nissan get by him and then he got an Acura at the end for 3rd and 9th overall. No dents or scratchs, everyone's stoked.

    The start

The RX8 got him into Nascar one

Catching the Acura on the infield

Got a good run at him onto the banking

Got him easily by the end of the front straight

    The Checkered flag!!

Yup, the BP55. It slightly underrated from the Japanese version and has a lower (6500RPM) rev limit - not that a BP will flow past that anyways.

It's very nice to see this car being competitive.

We noticed it didn't rev past 7000rpm---I remembered the N/A car going to 7500rpm every shift...Give him a few more months and at the rate he's going he'll drop a couple of seconds and be right in the hunt for the win. Where going to need more brakes with the 9lbs of boost at Cal Speedway also---he said they were going away towards the end of the race.

Stock size stuff with new brembo OEM rotors and Hawk Blue pads---they were all new before the event. We use Motul and flush after every event and then bleed every day. We've run the 12 hour event at THill and while pad wear was good enough to go the full 25 hours, the rotors had small cracks and may not have made it---definitely won't with the higher boost. When the car was N/A the 25 hour and then some was no problem...
