    Gt4 Gtr

    i have been lurking around the forums so thought id do a write up of my gtr, had ben wait for her to get back from having a gt4 gearbox installed into it

    well ive had my gtr for over a year and a half, thought i better add it to the projects thread

    brought it with 196,000kms on the clock looking like this:




    this is with no gearbox lol number 3 of 6 that i have blowen




    out comes engine and gearbox for a replacement clutch and yet another gearbox lol (yes thats me )

    after a trip to australia for 3 months, new mags were brought, and a gt4 gearbox driveline and conversion kit it looks like this (pics to come on the drive line) done 222,000kms now

    [

    so while i tried to replace my cam seals, and crank seal, the end nose bolt (crank) decided to pick up the thread and fully screwed the thread in the end of the crank, and also the key way is flogged and so is the crank sprocket for the cambelt

    so rebuild time for my gtr, but a good innings for that engine 222,000kms thrashed all its life i reckon lol on 18psi

    adjustible cams
    550cc injectors
    miata plug and play link
    3 inch exhaust
    gt4 gearbox

    12mm (i think) plate to bring the turbo away from the block to fit the larger gearbox


    much larger gt4 gearbox


    rear diff, rear sub frame modded to fit


    modified 3 inch exhaust


    modified subframe

      well my gtr has shat a clutch, well exploded, sounded like springs and bolts flying around in the bell housing

      sooooo i have a plan......

      i have accuired another gtr



      so when i pull my engine out it will go into the red gtr, reshell my gtr, swap the diffs over, axles and driveshafts

      bigger injecters
      newer version link
      turbo dump pipe

      also wanting you opinions on these sidekirts
      i like them on the black shell but dont think its going to suit on a red shell if i was to paint the skirts red

          NICE!!!

          I'm really diggin' the GT4 swap. I think once I finally get underway for my '90 4WD Protege, I'll go that route as well!

          The video is great, it really helps to show the difference between the dainty bits of the Mazda drivetrain compared to the nice and burly one of the Toyota!

          oh, and I love your license plate!

            very cool i looked over your install video very closely when you posted it on mazform

            would you mind taking a pic of the clearance between the turbo/inlet and trans? what exactly comes so close that you need to space the manifold out? could i redo the inlet pipe instead, or is there really no room without the manifold spacer?

              i did have one of me racing a jap bike on a twisty road on youtube but got flamed and badmouthed so much i decided to take it off, i have the video still somewhere

                    id love a gt4 gear box for my gtr but woulnt now were to start.
                    my box is a bit sticky and i found metal filings in it when I was changing the oil not a good sign. how hard is the conversion

                          few pics of my engine and gearbox,

                          everything is transfered form my black shell to my red shell

                          swapped over both rear diffs
                          interior stripped from black gtr
                          engine and gt4 box pulled from black shell
                          axles and hubs
                          wheels
                          driveshaft
                          various other bits and pieces

                          pics:










                          the bellhousing and the clutch slave cyclinder gets close to the turbo setup hence why the spacer is needed between the head and the manifold

                            thanks for that pic! my inlet pipe has already been cut and modified so that it is more of a straight shot... it doesnt angle towards the rear of the car anymore. hopefully this is enough to clear the slave cylinder... we'll see in a few days

                              Found your old motor's problem! It's got some sort of an orange cardboard virus where a proper oil filter is supposed to go.
