    GI M-Factory 3rd and 4th gearset

With more and more people stripping out their 3rd gears, I thought it would be a good time to see if anybody would be willing and want to put forth the money to get an upgraded gear set to eliminate the worry. Jon/therieldeal as already talked to Steve from M-Factory while the Helical LSD's were being made, and Steve said that they could make us some custom gears if we wanted.

After talking to Jon based on what ratios of gears he runs in his car, we're thinking of going with a stock size 3rd of 1.31 and a custom size of 4th of 0.97 which will give you the possibly to reach 121 in 4th.

These gears will be made of high quality material and will easily hold 500-600+ HP.

Steve said off the top of his head that the gear sets would probably be $500/gear. It is probably the most expensive upgrade you will do on your car, but also a needed upgrade.

Who wants some? (and will pay?)

Are we talking $500 for both gears needed? (I.e. 3rd for the primary and 3rd for secondary together is $500)

It would probably be a Helical, but I can talk to Steve and see what he recommends.

I looked on their site, and each gear for other vehicles is about $250/gear. So I assume it should be about $500 total. I will send Steve an e-mail to confirm this price.

Slight thread jack, but it would be awesome if we could get some Roll Center Adjusters made by them too, since the ball joints are interchangable between BG and BH chassis.

Thanks Jon, I was looking at the wrong gear set.

Not really, considering these will also work with the 4WD applications also. I for one, don't want to be limited on power because I'm afraid my tranny will blow up. Not to mention, if you have one of the nice Helical LSD's and some chucks of gear go into it and screw it up.

I just sent an e-mail off to Stephen at M-Factory asking him some more questions about cost and time. I'll let you guys know when he responds to me.

Ok, got an e-mail back from Stephen already. This is what he said,

                    - We would need minimum 10 buyers (again, 50/50 payment)
                    - Our current Honda B-Series PRO Synchro Gears (3/4) are $1499.95. It's
hard to give an exact cost without seeing the gears, but it will be less
                    than that
                    - You can choose the ratio that you require (all buyers must use the
                    same chosen ratio though)
                    - 1-2 months for the prototype, testing time, 1-2 months for production

The only issue you must be aware of is, although the gears themselves
will hold the power, the oem synchro system will not. At your power
level, it quickly wears down your oem synchro rings/hub/slider, and
without regular maintenance (i.e changing synchros every 10-15 passes),
it will start to wear down the dog teeth on the gear itself. Once the
dog teeth on the gear are gone, it is unuseable. Using synchro gears
with high power is very high maintenance.
So, how many people where scared away by this? How many would still want to do something like this?

I'm interested! 1000$ isn't too bad (and far, far from being the most expensive mod in my build, or even second most. Or third.)

I'll inform guys at the finnish mazda board about this project, there has been considerable interest in strengthening the feeblish G-box lately.

The problem is i'd need two sets but it will start to hurt my budget.

I think after the synchros are gone, it's a due time to go for dog box...
