    Yet another MS problem

Ok, went to install the MS1 I got, installed everything by the instructions. Got my laptop talking to MS. Fuel pump primes. The problem I'm having is that the car was running on the GTX ecu. running rich with the 460 injectors, and a bit lean with the 360cc cuz i was at 14psi on the vf10. Car currently has 460cc injectors in it.

So when I start up Megatune, I have the standard 8 gauges. On every single gauge I'm getting spuractic readings. None of them are zero'ed out. I could understand a bit of twitching on some, but it's all over the charts on every single gauge. The car started once for me on the pre-loaded map, whatever map that was. It was idling way too low, gave it a bit of gas, it rev'd up, then died. Couldn't get it to start back up after that. I checked all the settings, and they seems to be correct. After 45 minutes of trying to start and it still not starting, I pulled the plugs and let the cylinders air out. I then pulled up the 230 map, and tweaked it for my 460 injectors. Did all of that, burned it to ecu, and tried it once more. It started after a few cranks and ran for maybe 3-4 seconds, then died again. Now my battery is dead from trying to play with it so much, so it's on the charger for the night.

Anybody have any ideas what to change, look at, do?

Are you using the stock wiring?

Did you buy it from Lex? I had the same problem when I got mine. Make sure you're running the right .ini file, otherwise it's going to be almost impossible to start and not want to stay running. Your injector duty cycle will probably show 100% all the time too.

yeah you need to make sure all the version numbers are matching up in the configurator

Do you have a wideband? It might just be running lean at startup and choke. It takes LOTS of gas to start a cold car. Just a thought

Yes, I got the unit from Lex. I'm fairly sure I'm running the correct .ini file. If not, what do I check? My duty cycle is showing random numbers all over the place. It never stays still.

Ok, what do I check? I did get a message one of the times when I was starting MegaTune saying that numbers didn't match, but I don't get that message anymore.

Yes, I have a wideband. I have wired it in, and changed the setting in the configurator to the LC-1 default.

Eric, are you using Windows vista? Did you copy over the Megasquirt folder into Program Files as per instructions? Are you using a serial-USB converter (these tend to cause issues) Are the gauges sporadic when the car is off with ignition ON or just when cranking?

Have you tried disconnecting the tuning cable and trying to start the car with the tuning cable unplugged?

I'm running Vista, but I've got it to run without problems.

I did copy over the Megasquirt folder onto the computer.

I am using a USB converter.

The gauges are sporadic when the ignition ON and car not running.

I'll try to go out and start the car without anything plugged in, but I tried that last night and it didn't work. I can try again.

My gauges are sporadic sometimes too, but it's never caused any problems. Vista can work fine for a while, then f*ck your tune up out of nowhere. I've had this happen, which is why I'm still untuned.

Unfortunately Vista is the devil. The instructions warn against this. The Program Files you see are not the ones Vista acually uses. It stores the Megasquirt folder in a location called Virtual Program Files which is in a completely different location.

This means that when you copied over the Megasquirt folder, it doesn't matter because Vista is not using that location. This means you are using the wrong .ini file and that when you make changes and burn them to the MS they are not getting burned properly.

Any way you can get a non Vista computer? The serial-usb converter will also create issues especially on new computers.

If it's impossible to get a non Vista machine, locate the Virtual Program Files folder (hidden) and replace the Megasquirt folder in that location. You will see that there is a Megasquirt folder in that hidden location as well.

Sorry you had to deal with this, Vista and newer computers have a lot of issues with MS, usually an older used machine with a dedicated Serial port works much better.

So I tried to start the car without the cable plugged in and it turns but won't start.

I grab a XP machine and used the usb-serial converter. Got everything installed and got the correct port settings on the usb-serial converter. It will connect to the MS unit, but same thing. Gauges are all over the place. I tried to start the car, and the gauges will stay semi-steady and I see about 192-211 cranking RPM. Won't start still. I believe I have a log so you can check that if you want. I'll send the xls file to your e-mail.

Sounds like you're still not using the right .ini file. Is MegaTune showing "Fuel Pump On" while cranking? Also, did you flash it back to the base map? If not, I'd do that for a good starting point.

ok, so when MegaTune starts, it asks me which "project" i want to select. I select the BP_MSI_NOVAF_IDLE (this is the .ini file, correct?). It says the fuel pump is on, and it is on and building pressure (check this at the fuel rail). I might try to load the map that lex sent along with the 550 injectors to see if it starts.

Are you getting spark? I am having the similar issue with MS. Started, ran like crap and then died. This sounds EXACTLY like my issue. For some reason, I have no more spark. Please check that for me and let me know. Thanks...

well, i decided to try and load the 550 map into the MS since nothing was working. turned the key, and it started. idles fairly ok, but bogs like crazy when you step on the gas and is slow to rev through the rpm range. still builds boost. i'm gonna take it for a drive tomorrow and check all my grounds. also picked up a really nice usb-serial adapter cuz my current one is a cheap one. we'll see how that communicates with MS.
