AA porn (yes it's work safe)

first off for all you who don't know what AA stands for around here, it's audiophiles annonymous and secondly, there is no real porn in here

my buddy got his ED 15A today

his dad has a sweet workshop and had some birch laying around, so they used that rather than MDF, since it's lighter.

i think he said shipping weight was 35 lbs.

the back side of the cone looks like aluminum.

    side view.

    woven tinsels.

it's a bad ass sub. it'll be hooked up tonight to a JBL BP600.1 that he had from his previous car. it's going in a sentra SER. he's trying to do as much of it on his own, and not rely on me, which i don't mind. but today he bought the JBL 80.4 amp, which is only 40x4, after i told him to get the 180.2 and just run it to the front speakers at least he took my advice and is going to order some components.

whoa! the enclosure looks like mine but why is the sub facing upwards? not enough clearance in the trunk I guess.

Look perdie good. Makes me jelous.
Blue...this is off-topic but I've been debating some new subs/single sub. With the amp/HU I've got what do you recommend? Depends on how much I get for them I think. Anyways, I'm looking around $200 for a sub(s) and box. I don't care if I have to make a box, already made 2 but didn't like either of them and didn't have anywhere near the knowledge I have now. I don't care, 2 10s, 1 12. Used or new(include shipping).

Nah...I don't really know why I wanna get rid of them it's just been on my mind. I guess it's just one of those never done things. They take up a lot of space. I guess 2 10s won't take up much less space. I guess I want my subs just some custom fab boxes. I want them to fit into the space to the right and left of the trunk, behind the rear wheels. I had one made that sounded pretty good but I ripped it apart to carpet it and screw it up.
I want a new amp too but then I'd have to get a new HU. I think it's ok to just have 2 channels anyways. I just I'm kinda on an AA rant. It runs through my mind about new things to do....one reason I put speakers in the rear doors. One last thing, is it better to have components up front or will it sound ok to have the co-ax and a tweeter. I've been thinking about adding tweeters like yours intruder but molding them almost like a gauge pod.
Sorry for the rant but it's just some things I've been debating.

I'd love to have a custom enclosure for my sub. Then maybe I can get a second one and do it on both sides just like you have in mind. Problem is I don't have a lot of money to spend and I won't be able to do it by myself.

I don't see why you would need a new HU to buy a new amp. Just change the one feeding your subs and voila!

I don't know about adding tweeters to a set of speakers.
Components up front... Well, how do I answer your question? Components are a set of mid-range speakers and tweeters. Coaxial speakers already have the tweets embedded, so adding additional tweeters is like making them "component speakers". So, if I were you, I'd get a nice set of component speakers. I notice little difference between my Alpine Type S 6.5" coaxial speakers and the $250 CDT components I have now. The only difference is that the tweets being mounted up high bring the sound stage a little higher/closer to your ears. I expected a huge difference, so I'm kind of disappointed, but it's still a nice improvement.

Mounting the tweets in a pod is up to you. Again - I don't have the skills and this is the only reason I didn't mount my tweets in a special pod or some custom enclosure... or something like that.

I know the difference between the two. I wanted to know if they will cause any interferance. I wanted to know if it will hurt the sound stage instead of help it. If I just added tweeters to what I have now instead of the entire compnent set with the mid-bass drivers. I can hear my front speakers better when I lean up over the steering wheel. I don't want to buy tweeters and have them sound like crap because they interfere with my co-ax speakers.
The reason for a new amp was to get another 2 channels. My HU only has 2(R/S) preouts instead of 3(F/R/S). I don't think that's worth it.
Only problem I had with the first box was that it was too narrow and would fall over when I would turn...but that's nothing a little velcro couldn't stop.

                oookay, I get it now
I don't think additional tweets are going to cause interference, but I have no idea how you would go about adding them to your system. ???

regarding the 3rd RCA output, blue would suggest using the HU to power the rear speakers and using an amp only for the fronts. that's what I'm doing and I like the result. I recently purchased a US acoustics amp for $50 (very cheap IMO) and hooked it up to my front speakers - good stuff.

Yea, I've heard what he's said. I've got the 6 speakers running off the amp instead of the amp and HU. I've debated if I want to take them off but I haven't played with things in a while.
That sounds like a good deal for the amp. I got my pioneer from best buy. Very good deal too. I got it off the wall since it was the last one. It was half-off since it was a clost-out and then they took another 10-15% off for it being a demo. It was hooked up to all of their wiring except the power so it was actually never used.
I'd either run the tweeters off of the HU of splice into the existing wiring. I've got the amp wiring hooked to the stock wiring at the HU because I couldn't pull my after-market wiring.

yeah, it's facing upward cause of the tiny trunk that the SE-R has it's funky shaped, too. oh well. being that it's tuned so low, having the port facing a different direction than the sub will not cause any problems. by the time the freq is high enough and the waves are short enough, it's well above the tuned freq, so there won't be much if any sound coming from the port.

mazdamania, if you are happy with the JL's, keep them. no sense in spending more money if you like them, just not the enclosure. i'm a firm believer that the enclosure should be worth more than the sub(s). it's the enclosure that tailors the sound. if your HU only has 2 sets of preouts, it's usually front and rears, not sub. also, all you really need is a decent powered 2 channel amp for the front speakers, and a sub amp. once you have a sweet front sound stage, i don't think you'll want to amp any of the other speakers, or even run signal to them

That's what I had to do with my first box. I didn't calculate quite right.
Pretty sure it's sub and front. It's got a feature to turn off the sub, which is through the RCA line.
I know I've gotten very off-topic from your original post but what do you think about adding tweets to the co-ax speakers? Do you think they'll interfere with each other causing more problem than help?

well if it's got a way to turn off the sub through the HU then it is probably a sub output. odd. what's the exact model # and brand of your HU? as for adding tweets, why? things will probably end up so out of wack and off axis i had added tweets to my A-pillars a few years ago. i had a switch to turn their amp on and off. while yes the highs got louder, it just didn't sound as good with them on. i tried moving them to different locations, and it still wasn't nearly as good as a set of components. if you are going to mount components in your doors, find a set that works well for off-axis mounting. adire's koda components are excellent for it, but they are pricey. i'm hoping the price drops when ED and RE come out with their components on steroids

yeah you've got 2 sets of 2 volt preoutputs. it has highpass and lowpass. pioneers website doesn't clarify if it's 2 sets of full range that you can select the x-over point or not.

Well I'm convinced now to keep the JLs and if I do add tweeters I'll buy some components.
The LP for the subs only has I think 3 different options off 60 80 125? I don't remember exactly. The full range has a bunch of different EQ settings just for the amp. It's nice to be able to turn off the subs sometimes without getting back to the amp or wiring in a switch.
