GI: JDM Foglight Grill Replicas in Carbon Fiber

This is only a GI thread to begin with to see if there are enough interested people to make this go forward. If not, then i will forget it.

I contacted Jim Pierce (JPmotorsports) about getting the grills done in carbon fiber thru the guy that made the carbon hoods and hatches for the Escorts. This is a rough estimate based on only seeing detailed pictures that I sent him.
The price would be approx $1000 for the mould to be made, and approx $300
for each grill. Thats with 3-5 people, but the price would drop if we could get 10-20 people. The guy could give a more exact estimate if he could physically see the grill, but I want to make sure there is interest before I send off the grill.

I am thinking this will be a stretch to get even 5 people, especially considering the cost.

I will not front all the money for the mould, so the people interested are going to have to all chip in money, including myself to pay for it.

One last thing, I am thinking the person buying the grill will have to find whatever kind of 4" foglights they want, to install in the grill.
Let me know what you guys want. Remember I have an original grill already so, its up to you guys if this lives or dies.

And for the people that dont know what the grill looks like, here you go:

imo... cf is pointless. just get it fg... it doesn't weigh anything right now.. i think the mounting brackets and the lights weigh more than the grill itself. And ironically.. $300 after the mold is made.. isn't bad. that's what they go for used on ebay lol. let me know down the line if you need another mold guinea pig... i'm not using my grille for a while

Well I was not really looking to get it made specifically in carbon, just contacted Jim about it since his guy did a good job for the price on the hoods and figured he could handle these.

I asked Jim about the fiberglass, and he said they would mainly be fiberglass anyway and only carbon on the surface, just like the hoods were made. So the price wouldn't really be much different.

So yeah only carbon on the surface, sorry atomicEGT, only +2HP

one question tho can you by any chance able to get the fogs in yellow or clear?
I have searched on google and found lots of 4" round fog lights. Most all of them are clear, some have a clear lens but project yellow, and some have a blue tinted lens, but I did not find one with a yellow lens. I would say if you wanted to have yellow ones just buy some clear ones and get the yellow headlight tint from ebay or here: http://www.lamin-x.com/

How would the $1000 mold price be distributed? Evenly amongst per buyer?

couple threads up I posted this:

You could always paint it if you dont like the carbon.

Yes that was what i had in mind, and if there is enough interest I will throw down $100 toward the mould, so the the rest of you would only have to pick up $900. If you look at it this way, once the mould is paid for, thats it. Anytime after this in the future it would be just a matter of getting some people together and setting up a bulk order of the grills. Then after this is done, someone could get something going for slant carbon hoods.........

I think CF is a waste of money when it comes down to a grill. Fiberglass would be the best or even better, ABS plastic!
