    Mx3 ZE+LSD / Gearbox / Clutch problem?

Hey terrible way to start a worklog but here goes.

I just installed my g series gearbox plus MFactory LSD and 5th gear swap.

I'm getting some horrific noises, that I doubt are new clutch related? Gear oil is full, new bearings were pressed, bolts were torqued to spec with loctite on the ring gear bolts etc.

There appears to be no axle back lash, everything feels nice and tight in/outwards. It appears to be a purely rotational noise\eminating from the diff area. Did anyone elses LSD rattle out of the box? I thought nothing of it...

Youtube Video- under car + drive
Noise at 2:28 is the worst one, it sounds like gears scrubbing against metal / a horse...

    wtf?

you reinstalled the shim behind the outer bearing race, right? if not, that could be it. the only thing i can think of is an internal problem with the LSD, or possibly a clearance issue between the bolt heads and the shifter gate. you probably would have noticed that during the install though... it would have sounded like this:
bolts are installed every other hole. as i turn the diff you can hear the bolt heads hitting the shifter gate. the second bolt to pass over the gate has be...

i had them change the bolts to allow for more clearance prevent that problem, and no one else has had an issue... unless maybe somehow you got the original design bolts (unlikely) or the clearances inside your transmission are different for some reason (possible?). i never test fit in a v6 tranny, but Dan did without bolt clearance issues. he had the original bolts, but i told him the thickness they had to be ground down to.

When I compared MFactory and Quaife diffs, I did notice that the gears inside the Mfactory had a bit of play that the Quaife did not, but I didn't think it was a big deal and I don't think they would make a noise like that! I doubt there are any side effects in performance or noise from that little amount of play in the helical gears.

Hmm, if it's the bolts like Jon mentioned, I would think it would make noise all the time. Maybe you left a loose bolt in there or something?

Whatever it is, it sounds horrible .

i think the first thing you need to do (unfortunately) is STOP driving it and pull the tranny out again. i know it sucks (i just went through it with a brand new bad clutch) but you don't want to break anything else. for all we know, it could be some other internal transmission issue unrelated to the LSD... and you could end up damaging the LSD by driving it like that. then you're out a trans AND an LSD and it wouldnt be under warranty. If the LSD is in fact the problem, then i'm sure MFactory will cover it... but if you keep driving it and it goes on to destroy the rest of your trans, that won't be covered...

i deal with warranty issues all day long at work, the best thing to do when there is a problem is to stop using it immediately (whatever "it" is) and contact the place you purchased the item from

That part was done by a highly recommended gearbox shop, so I'd like to think so!

The bolts looked pretty low profile so I too doubt that was it.

Yea I didn't think it was much to worry about either...

Yea that video was literally the only drive, and the tranny is out already. Haven't had time to open it up yet, though I might leave it together and let the shop do that. Hopefully no damage is done, I tried to do everything right with this setup! all torqued to spec, loctite on the ring gear/diff bolts, assembly lube, bearings properly pressed, new locknuts etc etc.

hmmm if you had the work done by a shop, you probably should bring it right back there and ask them wtf is going on. there must be some sort of warranty on their work..?

Well I haven't updated this in a while, couldn't leave it on a negative! The LSD was stripped, and it was immaculate. My gearbox guy was very impressed. Put it all back together again and no trouble since... But a happy outcome none the less. Been busy since then:

So here are some videos of my now m62 supercharged. Only running stock pulleys at the moment plus FMIC = 1.7 psi Got a 6.6" overdrive pulley in the works and a turbosmart dual port BOV waiting for hopefully quieter idling! Some of these videos were just test runs, working out boost leaks etc, so it's more for the sound

                In car:

If you're wondering why I'm showing off my sidelights, I'm not, the m62 clutch is wired into the front fog light switch It was too convenient having the wiring right there, fused, switched and ready!

Also, is there a way I can change this worklog/thread title? Can't seem to do it the normal way by editing the first post heading

lol you'd think that, alas it was correct for the most part. Most I've seen is .1 bar or 1.7 psi according to MS now the boost leaks are sorted. That's why a 6.6" overdrive pulley is on the way
