GI: Possible cheap front big brake kit for BG

I've been researching ways to mount 11" VW Corrado rotors and relocating the stock calipers.

So far, the only possible combination I have found that should theoretically work is using Protege DX spindles/calipers.

You would still need to do some grinding on the caliper mounting 'ears'.

And, you would need to run a ~.25" spacer behind the rotor, which would possible warrant longer wheel studs.

I would fab the relocation bracket (mild steel) and spacer (aluminum). The spacer would incorporate a raised center ring to make the Corrado rotors hubcentric (they have a bigger hub ID).

    So, you would need:
    -Protege DX spindles/calipers
-Corrado rotors (~$35 each at Napa)
    -My bracket and spacer
    -Possibly longer wheel studs

First of all, is there even any interest in this? And second, how much would you pay for the bracket and spacer?

M-tuned sells a kit like this for the Miata for $110 that includes two brackets, two hubcentric rings, and some bolts. Making rings is obviously cheaper than making a spacer/ring combo. Plus, I am only a one-man operation.

This wouldn't be for me since I already have Wilwoods/2-piece rotors up front. Just trying to give back to the community . For comparison, the Willwood calipers are about $140 each, the rotors $230 each. That's $740 plus the price for custom brake lines, etc. And, you still have to mod the spindles and Wilwoods.

Don't vote in the poll if you don't intend to purchase a kit at the price you voted for.

Definitely interested if they're in my price range. I'll be replacing the brakes on my car right before spring, so this comes at a perfect time.

I voted Ferdi. I am curious what performance increase we'd see from unfortunately having to use DX calipers in the setup.

DX caliper = LX caliper the only difference is the outer bracket that holds the pads. Not sure why you couldnt use LX calipers? maybe Ferdi can chime in but i am running DX calipers with my EGT outer brackets swapped on with EGT pads.

Ha, I have everything here except for an LX caliper. I tried mounting the DX caliper on the LX spindle/rotor and it would not clear, so I *thought* that the DX caliper mounting holes were further out radially, which is what I was looking for. Going to go borrow an LX caliper now since I can't seem to locate my orginial ones...

i thought you wanted the holes in the spindle to be closer in radially? *confused*

the inner "half" of the calipers is 100% identical on every BG

Right, I was looking for the spindle with the holes furthest in radially and the caliper with the holes furthest out radially - basically looking for the combo with the biggest difference.

I have some newer LX calipers I was looking forward to using. Further, most people interested likely have LX calipers. If this can be made to fix the LX hardware, I'd see it as an advantage.

Any possibility of it working with LX spindles?

from what i understand, the bolt holes overlap when using the LX spindles.

Yup, I know and that's what I was hoping for, but like Jon said the holes would be too close together. The difference between the LX rotors (257mm) and the Corrado rotors (280mm) means that the bolt holes only need to move out 11.5mm, which would put it right next to the existing 10mm bolt hole.

With the DX spindle/rotor (235mm) the new bolt holes need to move out 22.5mm, which gives just enough room.

I'll look at it some more...

Ok, I've been talking to Ryan and he brought up two important points.

1.) Use a different caliper, like the RX7 ones. If I can get those to work with the LX spindle, I think that would be a good alternative, but not as cheap though. Thoughts? People more interested in that?

2.) Liability if something were to happen with someone using my brackets. I don't want to get sued or something. This one worries me a bit...

i denied a similar product based on the liability to the site and sponsoring a product. something i found out after the fact and does not apply to the previous instance is that liability falls on the owner if such products are sold as incomplete DIY parts (i.e: brackets, but no rotors/calipers). still i would look into the legal issues first.

I would be more interested in RX7 calipers - an improvement over the single piston stock sliding setup. Brackets and hardware would be enough for me.
