    Timing?

Whats do you guys think is a 'safe' amount of timing for a mostly '92 protege lx with an open exhaust, rx7 VAF, running 93 octane gas? I'n enduro racing it, so any power helps! Also, whats stock timing for the car?

    Thanks!

LX have the bp motor? stock timing is 10* but you should be able to run 16* with what you have going on.

Wind it untill it pings, then back it off slightly till the ping goes away.

Take a 12mm spanner on the road with you, keep going till it pings, then back it off slightly and tighten it up....

Figures mean nothing, engine condition, ambient temperature, fuel blend, fuel brand, operating condition, heaps of **** will depend if it pings or not

there are lots of variables, true. the way you're suggesting is doesn't leave you with a number...we're just suggesting a safe number that we've all ran and had positive results with.

Can't drive it on the road, as it's a race car, with no lights, no windows, no factory seat belts, no muffler or cat, and no plates. And I don't want to have it ping at all, so I won't do this.

Pinging is the sound when knocking or detonation is occurring:

I just recently advanced my timing from 12 to about 17*. It runs smoother on the bottom and pulls alot harder up top. I still cant seem to make any power in my midrange. Have you done the cut intake manifold yet racer?? I was shocked at how crappy the casting is. You would be amazed at the difference it makes after cleaning it up with the dremel.
