    E153 Trans swap - clutch group buy (poll)

    I know money is tight for many people, and a bunch of you are dropping coin on the adapter plates right now... so I'm wondering... Who would be interested in a clutch group buy, and when?

    The most likely combo would be the exact clutch that I have. 6 puck sprung hub disc w/ 2200# pressure plate & new throwout bearing. I have been very happy with this clutch and so far it has had no problem handling the power I'm making. The pedal feels like stock and it is very driveable, chatter is minimal (I was very pleasantly surprised).

    Solid hub discs are also available, as are 4 puck discs.

    I don’t have pricing yet, but I can promise that it will be quite competitive. This will also be a complete direct bolt-in kit w/ your (slightly modified) stock flywheel (see how to).

    DO NOT VOTE IN THIS POLL UNLESS YOU ARE ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN AN E153 CONVERSION CLUTCH.

    I want a single disc with mine. I have a 6puck sprung now and it has a lot of chatter in reverse and taking off uphill
    I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight.       I'd prefer a 2600# pressure plate with a 6-puck unsprung disc, could you make that an option? I'm trying to collect everything I need at once, so I'd prefer February at the latest...

          rice - what do you mean by a "single disc"? all the options i listed are single disc...

          atomic - the two stiffest pressure plates out there that i could find were the 2200# one i'm offering (and using), and the ACT Xtreme which is 2500# and costs a fckton of dinero. if you want to go with that just grab the appropriate ACT disc to go with it, i listed the application in the how-to

          off to bed!

          PS yes i did edit the original post, i checked my emails from october and the plate i have is 2200# not 2100#.

              according to that, a little over 500 ft-lbs. from the reading i've done, that's pretty much how clutch mfg's get their clutch ratings... they dont actually torque test every pressure plate/disc combo.

              the numbers for the calc are:
              8.75"
              5.90"
              0.38 CF
              2200 lbs
              2 friction surfaces

              PS: even with an organic disc (0.25 CF) this pressure plate should hold 345 ft-lbs at the crank.

              Torque Transmitted by Clutch Calculator calculates the maximum torque that can be transmitted by a clutch under uniform wear based on operating dry and running in oil coefficients of friction and lining pressures.


              i found another calculator if anyone wants to double check the ZOOM one. you get to do the math to convert 2200 lbs into N/mm2

                i voted july tho i may have a bit of a bonus at work coming. i have to buy the engine mounts first. clutches are the easy part.

                  Jon, is the 2200# plate you're using from KYclutch? Is it still the Miata plate? I'd like to upgrade when I put the new trans in.

                    yeah it is but it's not one that he makes in house. if you want just a pressure plate you could probably get in on the group buy too.

                          im in, and i assume it could bolt up to a fidanza light weight fly no prob just like the stocker right?

                            it should bolt up fine, but i dont know if the fidanza is the same/thinner/thicker than the stock flywheel. you'll note in my how-to that i recommend resurfacing the flywheel down by at least .1" to reduce the amount of clearancing needed in the bellhousing. with the fidanza, this will not be possible (but also may not be required if the flywheel is already thinner).
