    GI: Custom product?

So... where I work we have several big CNC's that can make just about anything from the materials we have available. Tig welding and powdercoating are an every day practice in-house. We can send things out for anodizing or high-gloss polish.

They stock 6061 T6 aluminum as round tubing and round extrusions (bar stock) in sizes from 1" to 8" diameter.

Anyone have any ideas as far as some sort of automotive item or product that I could try to design and have made? Preferably something new, or something that is normally way overpriced...

You can take up what Ferdi did with the brake brackets and adapt them for a 2piston caliper. We need more brake options for the BG.

For myself, I'd like a VJ23 downpipe/turnoff to replace the cast one but that is not really CNC work.

EDIT: Some under-car bracing could be very nice. Like an X brace or something of the sort to really stiffen the chassis. Or something to go over and reinforce the frame rails.

they arent round. that's sort of an issue, everything is set up to make round things. I could make the hub spacer for the rotor but not the bracket.

personally i wouldnt want aluminum caliper brackets either.

attached is an example of the sorts of things we usually make. the handles and rocker lugs on the adapters are part of the extrusion, but they also have smooth round extrusions.

but alas, both of these items are not round. and mike is doing a pretty good job with the fuel rails, i wouldn't want to encroach on that.

Interesting you brought this up. We just bought our first high power lasers at work so now I should have the ability to start making various flanges and brackets and things of the sort. We are a high precision micromachining shop that doesn't deal with a lot of metal cutting so up until now I've only been able to cut metal foils up to around .015" thick(for you machinists out there, picture things with tolerances around +/- .0005" to .001" and smaller to get an idea), now the new lasers should be able to go through 1/2" stainless.

It will be a couple of months at least until these lasers are up and running though, but I hope to be one of the first trained on how to use it so I can start playing.

                      again, not round...

Scott those new lasers sound pretty awesome! i wish we had something like that. we do have a laser but it just does surface engraving.

metal inserts for motormounts? Instead of taking flat stock and welding it to the sides, you just heat the mount, yank out the rubber, put in the metal insert, and voila!!

Various round bushings/spacers, like for the twin trapezoidal links?

                        Steering wheel hub adapters/extenders?

                        e-brake handles?

Shift knobs, with a laser-etched logo on the top?

dunno, just throwing some stuff out there...

I have some aluminum hubs for a two piece rotor set I wouldn't mind making a bunch of spares for---At some point (after the tubular control arms) I was going to make an affordable front brake kit (under a grand) and I could sell the hub's. I could offer them up...

shifter bushings? we make all sorts of stuff where I work, but I haven't been there too long, and I'm not in the engineering department till probably early april.

what about hubcentric rings for when people use civic rims and such and the center doesn't fit tight enough?
