    Ice Racing yesterday!!!

I was at my third Ice Time Trials event yesterday. It was a BLAST!! With the warmup from last week, the snow was mostly gone, and the ice was frozen over perfectly smooth. We took the opportunity to go a little on the outside of the track we had before, so it was a hair longer than before.

We had 49 drivers, 21 of which were running studded tires. First two heats are run clockwise, last two counter-clockwise. Your two fastest times are averaged, and that's your time for the day. I had to leave before the 3rd and 4th heats, so didn't get an official final time.

I actually sharpened my tires, but my cutter was getting dull towards the end, so I only got the outer two rows of bolts on my rear tires sharpened. It made the car VERY tail-happy, and slightly hard to control at speed around corners. This should be remedied by next week's event.

Ok, without further ado, here's a quick in-car vid of my fastest run:

    Run Number Two (my fastest.).

Here are some photos of the event...

Practice run, with a couple passengers..

    Some action shots:

This Saab got the living crap beat out of it!!! three drivers used it. This is Wendy driving:

If anyone's around the area, and wants to, COME ON OUT TO AN EVENT!! All you need is a helmet and a seatbelt, and for the car to pass a basic safety inspection. (positive terminal on battery covered, battery held down solidly, no hemmorhaging fluids.) It's 35 bucks to enter for non-members, 25 for members, and 45 covers entry fee and first event if you join right there. If you do two or more events, it's worth it to join..

Next week, Sunday February 7, is the next event. The following week, Saturday February 13, we're hoping to have another night-time event.

D'0h!!! I forgot about the banquet. Probably a daytime event then, since the night-events tend to start collecting attendees around 4pm. Maybe the night event will be the week following, then.

as long as there IS another night event or two..

          gotta use the upgrades:

Haven't heard yet where it's gonna be, though, or anything else other than the 13th.

Thats funny was just goin through the mail and noticed they sent a letter it reads

"The banquet (Saturday Feb 13) will be held at the same location this year as last year- Wave Bar and Ballroom, which is right next to our old autocross location -Timber Rattler's Stadium. The Cost will be 15 per person including drink (soda, milk or coffee) with a similar menu as last year. Doors open at 5:30 and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm."

Ya I never went before and only particpated in two lapping events last year. But hoping to become a little more active of a member for the years to come...

It actually IS very easy on the equipment, for the most part!!

Other than being at WOT most of the time, and being pushed as hard as the engine will allow. The alternator was getting a huge workout at the night events, but I got my HIDs installed at work today, so things are easer in that regard. maybe even free up some HP!! Otherwise, the suspension is taking the biggest beating. The struts are crap and need replacing, and the brakes are almost worn down too far.

I'm going to try for a better camera mounting this coming sunday, to get a wider angle and show more of the course.

Do you guys disconnect the swaybars and run softer springs??? I did a few lapping days with Tanner Foust in Colorado in an old Group B car---couldn't believe the grip and had the time of my life!!! I've got to get back out there...My friend Jim Cox from Minnesota is starting to get into it---he has an S10 truck with a V8 and AWD from an Olds Bravada---should do well on the ice...

DAMMIT! I had an inkling Jim Cox stole my idea.

Hey, do any of you guys know Dave Parps? He was my co-driver at Sno*Drift this year, told me I should ice race to practice before Sno*Drift next time. Ironically, I'm wearing my Hakkapeliitta hat right now...

What happened to you at Snow Drift??? They show you as a DNF, but can't find any stage times---did you start?

What didn't happen to me at snodrift is a better question. Here are the results until I crashed out http://www.rally-america.com/events/.../standings/15/ I was on Camp 30 (stage 16) when I hit a berm apparently hard enough to get all 4 wheels in the air. The stage was actually going really well all things considered. I passed several people on that stage.

Up until then I was trading stage times with Matt McGee/Phil Marsh (Phil is a friend of mine and crews for Chris Greenhouse) who were driving an N/A Subaru. I'm pretty proud of myself for being able to run down one of the AWD guys.

When I crashed, I broke the inner and outer tie rod ends. They're not a hard fix but you can't finish the stage when you don't have steering.

That really wasn't the worst part of the weekend either. On my way up, I broke my cellphone as I was driving through Chicago. Then I found that I had a nail in the tire of the trailer. (The trailer wasn't mine, I was borrowing it from a friend) Then this happened"

                            Then this

They don't call me The Paul Donlin Experience for nothing I guess. Moral of the story: wear your seatbelt!
