    Blowers not working

    well it is sort of, the blower only works on either full power, or not at all. None of the middle settings work. Someone said its probably the rear stat??? and what is one of them? is it the dial assembly?

    I think the person may have said "rheostat" not "rear stat". I don't really know the specifics of the BF, but usually with blower motors, there's usually a little resistor box, that limits the current to the motor, thus controlling the speed.

    I'm not sure of the location of this unit in the BF, but I'd suggest looking near the fan motor under the dash, that's where it is on the BG.

      I'll check the fsm when I get home but you should check your fuses. Some cars use one fuse for the blower low settings and a seperate fuse just for the blowers high setting cause it uses more power on high, if it's like that and the low fuse is blown then that's y only high works

        Cheers for the replies, i will have a proper look into it 2moro.

        Been told its the resistor pack.

          Look under the dash, on the passenger's side. You'll see the blower motor. Follow the leads from the motor to the resistor pack (2 screws IIRC). Remove the pack and count the broken resistors.

          Go find a BG protege / 323 resistor pack in the JY. Re-configure two wires in the connector to match the resistor layout. Slightly enlarge the hole where it is housed. Plug in. Enjoy heater.


          (I'm typing this from memory. You'll need a DVM to check the resistors on the pins, and you'll need a shop manual to look at the schematic. Simple stuff, really. Shouldn't take too long, but don't rush the job. When you pull the old resistor pack, you'll ask yourself the same thing I did: "Why the hell did Mazda do this?")

          Several years ago, I put the procedure on the 323perf forum, and the yahoo forum. You can try your luck with searching the yahoo forum for "resistor pack"

            Bearings or bushing bad in the motor will cause a motor to pick up speed more slowly and the movement of it is accompanied by a growling type sound. The bushing has worn to an egg shape or the bearing has developed a bad area. Usually, the wear is at the bottom of the bearing or bushing where the gravity has been holding the internal shaft down on it. When the motor does get up to speed it may still have some of that low growl as it runs. The speed will likely be reduced in rpm (revolutions per minute) but will be difficult for you to detect.

            If the motor will not start at all, turn it on and carefully spin the blower wheel in the correct direction. It it now runs, the bearings are likely worn badly. When a motor has reached this state, it is usually too late to save it. There are several options:

            * Oil the motor very well and see if it will temporarily get you by until a better time to repair or replace it. If you can feel movement of the shaft perpendicular to the motor, then you know the bearing is not perfectly round.

            Don't worry about the motor shaft movement in and out of the motor. That is called "end-play" and it is normal.

            * TIP--Remove the blower assembly and rotate the mounting position of the motor 90°.

              mine did the same thing this past winter and i ended up having to replace the blower motor. i took the p/n off the one in my car and looked it up on ebay and found a matching one out a grand vitara or something like one of those little jeep things. anyway i put it in and problem solved. the heater blows so hard now it drowns out the radio.
