This happened 2 years ago when I got my 323 hatch.
When I got it it seemed to be really down on power. Checked the compression and every cylinder had less than 90psi. I think it was the previous owners running 15 psi on a stock ecu and a n/a distributor.
Well I had to keep driving it as I was doing the b6t swap in my festy at the time. So one night I was heading back to school in PA. It was 11 at night and was annoyed because I had already had to turn around go back for stuff I forgot twice. So I decided to vent alittle. When I pulled out onto the highway I ran it up to 7k in second and then in 3rd it didn't pull as hard but I kept going. I let off around 110 and started to let it coast down. Then I see red and blue lights is the mirror. So I pull over and get a ticket for 107mph in a 55. Well when I started it up to pull away it had a horrible rod knock. So I had managed to get what ended up being a $600 ticket and blow my motor at the same time. I drove it home and took my dads truck to school that week. Swapped in a b6d long block the next weekend. Now pics of the carnage.
Ended up having 2 spun bearings and cracked rings on 2 cylinders.
