My first 323! 1989 SE inside!

OK so i answered a craigslist ad for a "1989 323 2 door." I was excited and called to find out what it was. The ad said $400, car dosent run blah blah. The woman who answered said it was an 89 SE 3 door automatic that cut off in traffic one day, so she bought another car to haul her 4 kids around. The car is slightly rough. It has a good dent behind the drivers door, a hell of a dent in the fender, and a scrape over the drivers rear wheel well. The clock showed 97k miles, and the car weakly turned over, so i had to make an offer. $200 later, the car is parked amongst my 626 turbos, an oddball since its bright red. I need to find out the running problem, but its hard to diagnose by myself. It has fuel (oddly it dosent prime when you turn the key over), but i still need to check for compression and spark. The car looks mostly virgin with the exception of someone straight wiring the fans. The coolant is green and the oil is burnt black, so im hoping the motor is still decent. I need to find an extra set of hands to work the ignition, but ill get to it. I need to make more pics, as i only have 1 at the moment.

    Suggestions are always appreciated!

Poor car, only 97k miles and its already quit running! I checked compression today, i got some oddball numbers, 150 on 3 and 120 on 1. Should be good enough to run. I pulled the plugs and they looked like complete ****. I also realized yesterday the brakes dont work, lol. Im guessing the 323 GT rear disk setup should work, but did any other trim lines comes with rear disks?

        I love the paint!

I would start by doing a fuel pressure check, then ignition check. If you have fuel and spark, it has to be timing. I would make sure your T belt hasnt skipped.

Once you get it running, you would do your self a great deal by doing a full tune up. Plugs, wires, oil, T Belt and water pump maybe (Unless she had receipts saying she had done it recently), and a cap and rotor.

Let us know what you find!

I ordered all my tune-up parts from rock-auto. My biggest problem is trying to diagnose this thing by myself. I plan to recruit a friend when all the parts come in and knock this out. I cant wait for the 30 MPG! Now i just need to find some cheap wheels and some good seats and ill be on my way!

EDIT: Keep forgetting i have 3 323 GT wheels, need to find a fourth!

My local pull-a-parts have 2 capris, so we'll see this weekend.

I'd grab the rear suspension bits from the Capris, to get the disk brakes. After that, invest in some struts and springs and bushings. The B6 is an ok motor (I pushed mine to 125 every time I got on the Autobahn) and should be pretty solid and reliable.

I don't recall if the distributor has the same spring / weight advance system as the B6T, but I'd check on that too. They can be easily rebuilt or replaced if you have the know-how. Too bad Corksport stopped supporting the BFs; you might want to check with them and see if they have anything left.

The Mercury Tracer has all the nice interior bits, and most have the tach in the gauge cluster. I'd grab that cluster and transplant your speedo (to keep your mileage accurate).
