Hey I just picked up this MX6 today. You'll Never guess what I paid for it. Has a few problems but I think I can work with it. Its a 92 2nd gen MX6. Just had the automatic transmission rebuilt about 6000 miles ago. New Brakes, New Distributor, (I think they were off when setting the timing). Anyways take a look and see what you think.

I'm gonna say you stole it for $700

oooooooooo.... black leathers and a silver exterior!

I like 2nd gen MX-6's and you seem to have found one of my fav. color and interior combos!

Yeah, I think I stole it too. I actually paid $1000, dude thought it had a blown head gasket. The oil is clean and full, and so is the coolant. It runs and drives really good, but when you jump on it, it has no jump. Thats why I think a little turn on the distributor to find the sweet spot and it should go pretty nice.

also maybe a plugged muffler or cat.

that is a hella good deal man!

Thats a good point. I'll have to check into that also. Thanks for the tip. I took the air filter out to check it and it was just nasty. That didn't help the situation any either. Plus it needs a serpentine belt, there's some fraying goin on in there.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you there. a good way to test it is to just take the muffler off first and drive it around and see if there is more power, if not then take the cat out and drive it. If that doesn't do anything then its not exhaust related.

I bought a car for $500 that they guy thought the clutch was slipping on and it was just a plugged muffler making a whistling sound. I shook the muffler out for a few hours and then sold the car on ebay for $2200.

Nice, now thats how you flip a car. I'm gonna get the belt, and air filter replaced on monday. Then I'll check the timing and compression, I need to get the fault codes read to. I think I have one of those cheap beep/blink testers, should work ok. I'm excited to get started on it. The interior reallly really needs to be cleaned. It was a teenage girl who drove the car, you all know how that goes. Surprisingly no tears in the seats. The dash has a small area where it seperated from the front panel, needs to be tucked back in. No Stereo which sucks, but all the amp wiring is ran already. Haven't investigated the speakers yet. Alot of work to do. At least the cost of the car was under budget so I have some extra cash to put into it.

Went to AutoZone before closing time. Got a new Air Filter and Belt. When I got home I grabbed a beer and headed off to the Garage. With the help of my trusty Timing Light I learned that the timing was at about 18 degrees BTDC. Set that at the suggested 10 degrees. Changed the belt. That was fun, let me tell ya. I don't know how these guys put those engines in Festiva's and whatnot expecting to be able to work on them. Anyways, after replacing some wiper blades, I took it for a spin. It performed alot better. Not like it should, but better. It felt like it actually had a passing gear (automatic). Seems to shift really hard between first and second. After the test drive, I installed a head unit. A Kenwood El Cameleon that was layin around. So all in all I had a pretty productive evening of drinking beer and workin on my MX6.

nice deal you got there. what are your plans for it?

03-14-2010, 04:12 AM
I'm not sure yet. So far my plans are to get it cleaned up, everything workin right, find out what else is wrong with it. Go from there I guess.

03-14-2010, 06:20 AM
I have a compression tester. When you're at the house tomorrow, it's in the shed. should have the proper fitting. Have fun doing that on the FWD v6 ;)

Nice score. Even if it has a blown HG just swap in a klze. Less than 2000 bones for car and motor...can't beat that

MX6 got a bath today, The only thing I got done to it. It was my son's 5th birthday, so "Horray" to him. Anyways here are some pics of it after taking a shower and a little extra attention to the wheels and tires. The body defects really show up now that its clean. Still not in to bad of shape though.

Is this a Canadian car or something? The 92 in the US was still the 1st gen MX6.

03-15-2010, 01:50 PM
92 was the transition year. When both of them were built. I made a joke that both 1st and 2nd gen mx6's sat side by side on the lot.

Today I went to Autozone again. Picked up some SeaFoam and some Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs. I don't know which it was but it made a huge difference. The SeaFoam made a Sh** Ton of smoke. I think I covered the neighborhood with a pretty thick blanket of smoke. I replaced some fairly new NGK's with the Platinum +4's. It actually seemed as if the top end was there. Before it seemed like the car would accelerate quickly but when it got to the higher RPM's it would just puss out. Ordered a new catalytic converter today, and some CV Joints because the one on the right sounds like its thunking around a little. Did not pass state emissions. That was a bummer but I did expect it. Hopefully the new cat will change that. Anyways if anything I've described turns a light on for you I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks to all.

I killed an engine with seafoam once... you should do the HEI mod with an external MSD Blaster 3 coil like the one turpro has for sale!

03-16-2010, 10:07 PM
How on earth did you kill an engine with seafoam?

03-16-2010, 10:11 PM
And why on earth would you tell me i should buy something from Turpro that you're already buying. Thats messed up dude.

Silverton came by yesterday to lend me a hand. Thanks for the help bro. We ran the trouble codes. Came up with a few. VAM Sensor was going out. Along with a few O2 sensors. And a EGR Position Sensor. Does anyone know the location of this one? We could not find it. So off to the junkyard we went in search of a VAM Sensor. We had success after lifting many of hoods. I think we found it in a second gen Probe. Picked up a few other various parts also. Like a radio antennea, mines broken. Some door panel clips, alot are missing on the driver side. But it seems like the car is coming back to life little by little. So the only trouble code still coming up is the EGR Position Sensor, so if anyone knows where I'd find that please let me know.

Nice ride, very impressive for the year that the body is that straight. Sensor are nothing, atleast you weren't sold a lemon that had major hidden probs.:thumb:

Well, she runs like a charm. Passed emissions with flying colors. I got an Air Bag Light that blinks once than five times, than repeats. Kinda annoying. The catalytic converter made a huge difference on the emissions and the way the car ran all together. I'm sad to say I have to sell it now. :( How much should I list it for? Any suggestions? I was just gonna take offers. I just picked up another car. A 97 Pontiac Grand AM. 51,700 miles, interior and exterior are perfect. The engines kinda grungy, and it was overheated and there's no compression on #4 cylinder. I only paid $350 bucks for it. So I won't be out as much as I paid even if it needs a new engine. It should sell pretty good for having so little miles. Anyways, thats what I got for now.

I forgot to give credit to you nerd racing. You were right from the get-go. Thanks for the input man!!!

So you are getting rid of a Mazda for a Grand Am!?

Those cars are worthless, used to have a similar 1996 model when I lived in CA. Car always passed emissions, engine always healthy and strong, but in less than a year the A/C, heater, rear window, odometer, oil sensor, transmission started giving me problems. Sold it for $1,500. It was all tinted, paint immaculate, wheels recently painted, the tranmission would only fail if taken to SF so the one who bought it did not even know it was bad.

It was posted for sale in one of those car lots where you pay a fee, beside the car there was a Honda Civic 1991 on steelies, the hood was blue, the doors yellow and the body red, like 30 people were inquiring about the wagon.

Never ever again will buy domestic car.

No, I'm not getting rid of any Mazda for the Grand Am. In fact I just bought another MX6 over the weekend. The Grand Am was just a hot deal I could pass up. It runs great now with a new set of heads. It only Has 52,000 miles on it. I plan to keep it for toting kids around. (I have 2) The MX6 I just got over the weekend is a base model 96. Has a blown head gasket, (its the Inline 4 cyl) I towed it home yesterday and completed the teardown. Just waiting on some gaskets and I'll prolly start the build up today. Alot of part scrubbing to get all that milky shiv out, let me tell ya. Anyways I'll post some pics when I'm done with it. Its in pretty good shape. It has a nice exhaust package on it. Chrome Header, High Flow Cat, and DTM High Performance Muffler. Sounds like a beast. Anyways I have some more work to do so take care. Thanks for the inquiries.

I sometimes do that when searching on craigslist, use the keyword headgasket and it is ridiculous the prices of some of the cars that are been sold. Have to resist temptation or else will have a dealership here in my neighborhood.

Home Owner's Association gets anal about parking cars in front of my own house. Its the first and last I buy a house with HOA. A friend is selling me a Cabriolet for 500 OBO and I am so tempted to slap a VR6 engine in it.

04-29-2010, 12:46 PM
Yeah, I've got that "dealership look" going on, but the good news is none of them look like garbage. they are all nice cars. No HOA in my neighborhood. I hate those guys, always complainin cuz my trash cans are 6 inches outside the lines. they can go to hellican. Yeah so i got that hg all done up, got the car running right, "THANKS SILVERTON!!!!!!!" but now all of the sudden i have a slight tick in the valves. I was thinking one of the cam caps may be a little loose. at least that is my prayer.

I picked up my MX-6 for 500.00 but need to replace the timing belt no big deal 30.00 bucks at NAPA. :wow:

I <3 My Mx-6

that's a pretty nice mx-6 you found there , I'd never miss the opportunity to buy that !
