    Carbon fiber mud flaps

so I have officially begun the construction of something carbon fiber, i figured mudflaps would be a good start, semi-flat and easy to fab. The rear exposed side will be gloss/satin (still unsure) and the inside next to the wheel will have an application of truck bed liner to ease the rock chipping and make it easier to hose off. I was thinking about stenciling something on the exposed side with the bed liner. Any ideas? Will post pics of the finished product. Any input would be awesome, specially on how to post pics. Thanx all.

Easy there killer, I am working with limited space and time, and I have never done composite fab before, learning as I go. We will see how the prototypes turn out. Who would pay what for what I have described?

^^^^808 they would look pretty good on your car. I was thinking the mazda M on the exposed side. Or, 323 or GTX or something cool like that. Prolly the M because my car is not a GTX, sniff..

The car in my sig is totally wrecked. Someone was nice enough to rear end me while it was parked.

Haven't forgotten nor given up. Been experimenting with single and two layer lay-ups. 1 layer is highly flexible and you still get a beautiful look, no idea as to the durability of the resin when it comes to constant flexing. 2 layers is slightly flexible, just enough to mount them but not much give otherwise. My biggest problem that I am running into is finish. Been too cold here in WA lately to get a good bubble free surface. I have found that laying up on tempered glass (5$ window from a re-store) gives a glass like finish, but once again major air bubbles. Will keep plugging away.

Ok, did a few lay-ups on glass, still have bubble issues, but I think I can get over those. I have gotten more ambitious and moved to 3d objects that go from this piece of foam insulation to a single layer (badly finished) carbon fiber cold air "nostril" (makes the most sense to me to name it this)Click image for larger version

not my style, but i think it looks like a great piece. what about a carbon fiber gas fill door? thats the same for the 2door and 4door

you know, i am just starting out here. However that being said, if i could make a honeycomb like structure, using layers that ran perpendicular to the primary door surface, and fill those with a "lighter than air" gas, you would end up with a pretty solid piece after 3-4 layers for your body surface that would be light as hell. Would be tricky getting window hardware to work though. Hmm.....

No.. he means... the door covering where you put the gas.

wow, I kinda went out there, didn't I? Well, on to what you really mean. Just a fuel filler door skin or a whole locking fuel filler door? One is realitively simple, the other, not so much. Not impossible of course. On the helium filled door, they do make gas impregnated carbon fiber skateboards. Don't know how good they are, but it is where I got the inspiration for the honeycomb design

I'm wondering if carbonfiber is too brittle for mudflaps, I guess we'll find out!

For the rally car, I'll be sticking with urethane, but on the street car that doesn't really use them a whole lot I'd give CF a shot.
