    Can 1.6l miata flywheel/clutch work in 323GT?

I have a racing beat flywheel from a 1.6l miata that I would love to use. Can I just order a miata clutch and slap it in to replace the flywheel clutch in the 323GT? Or will the pilot bearing and shift fork not mate right?

    thanks.

the general rule of swaping clutches/ flywheels is that they all interchange between engines but if u use a miata flywheel u need a miata clutch, if using a 323 clutch use a 323 flywheel. Although i just saw someone fit a mx6 clutch to a protege flywheel and it worked

in my b6t i have a toda racing flywheel that i found in my JDM b6t. i looked on the toda racing website and they never made a flywheel for the GTX or B6T platform from what i could see. However they did make one for the miata, so im assuming this is for a miata. I am running this flywheel, with a B6t clutch, and its all working fine.

Thats good enough for me to try it, so glad I never sold the racing beat flywheel (had it posted here). Just need to figure out a clutch set to use. Not sure if the GT is different than the GTX but my GT has a recessed flywheel not a flat one like the miata making clutch interchange impossible.

            B6T = stepped flywheel, N/A b6 & miata have a single plane flywheel.

I think its possible to do if you use a miata clutch, but keep in mind the GT/X clutch is larger diameter so you'll lose some of those benefits.

The only thing I am unsure of is if the spline for the clutch disk will match the dia and spline of the input shaft of the transmission. I know F-type and G-type are totally different size

@mrcrumble - might be a special flywheel or one from an escort or bg gtx or something, the B6T clutch will not work with a Miata flywheel (stepped flywheel vs single plane, and different diameter disks)

              per rockauto.com

              miata 1.6l = 7 7/8x22Tx15/16

              GT/X = 8 7/8x22Tx15/16

Damn, a whole inch less to boot, same ID and tooth count though. I could just use a higher performance clutch set since there are tons of miata's running boost on their smaller diameter discs.

Weird, when I purchased an ACT clutch from MSM, they showed a few different model cars as being compatible with the unit, like the 1.8l Miata:

the 1.8l miata uses a stepped flywheel like GT/GTX's. Only the 1.6 used the smaller one.

As I read the 1.8L Miata uses a 215mm clutch disk but a 225mm can be used

                      Interesting.

Flyin miata recommends a heavier flywheel for turbo applications so I may not use it after all. Makes sense in a way that it will smooth out the transition between boost and vacuum.

Hmm, idk about that, I have a Fidanza flywheel installed, its been on both my B6T and BP+T, I love the thing

I suppose its worth a shot, light flywheel + smaller clutch = huge weight reduction. Not to mention tons less inertia. Problem may come trying to find a clutch that can stand up to the turbo; haven't looked yet.

if the 1.8 miata and gt/gtx flywhere are the same type....is the miata one lighter?

er, I meant it was worth a shot to use the 1.6l miata flywheel. Looks like ACT makes a 7 7/8 for a whopping $400+ dollars. At least its not 400 for the clutch AND 400 for the flywheel since I already have the flywheel.
