    Regarding the GTX engine value

Availableto me at a good price is a complete engine from an 88' USDM 323GTX. The catch is that the engine has been disassembled, fluxed, decked and left in boxes. I need to know in a realistic light the true value of this engine. Machine work has been done. It was not oversized, pistons are original. It will be professionally assembled and complete with manifolds and stock turbo.

What is the market for this engine? If I posted it for $1800 would I be laughed at? Thanks for your input.

1800 for essentially a rebuilt to stock?

easy money ... just be sure not to skimp on the reassembly and doccument everything. all the measurements, specs, keep all receipts for the gaskets and rings/ bearings

basicly be able to prove it and you will easily get 1800 +

to most $1800 would be a great price, however its gonna be tough to sell it. You gotta think realisticly that there arent to many GTX/GT owners left, the ones with these cars are scattered all over north america and you will likely need to ship it it sell it. Another thing is that most of the serious GTX/GT guys wont want a "stock" engine and if thier engine needed a rebuild it wouldnt be getting stock parts.

A good example of this is the Ebay land speed record GTX and engine. When the guy couldnt sell the entire car he posted the engine(which at one time pushed 450HP) for $2500 and he never even got a bid.

You would be asking a fair price but it may take awhile to sell so dont tie up to much money in it if you are looking for a fast turnaround
"See that car, in the 80's that car was deadly." Random man to his son while passing the GTX in a parking lot

Well the investment is small as it is sort of thrown in on another purchase. If I can get $1500-1800 for it within say 6 months to a year it would effectively cut the cost of the original purchase in half and that would make it very cost effective.

Thanks for your advice. I will document the build here so that you can all see it and hopefully someone here will want it.

We should start a poll. I in no way would pay that much for a rebuilt engine. No offense to you or the opinions posted, but looking on car-part.com, you can find plenty of capri longblocks to use, if you (or me) were to somehow ruin the stock enigne in my GT, for under $700. And with as slow as the economy is you can find someone to rebuild your rebuild-able B6T with quality parts for a heck of a price.

when you are looking at 1500+, i would think most people would just buy a bpt swap (trans and motor)

Both excellent points. I don't realistically expect to get $1500 for it. My current plan is to rebuild the engine that the previous owner took apart for myself with a slight bump in compression and remove the Madza crate engine with only 20k on and offer it for sale. Of course all this depends on the sale of my other major asset first...which so far is proving troublsome.

If anyone wants it, great. If not I'll have a complete known good engine on hand for the future.

If its been fully rebuilt, machined and all the work done by a reputable engine builder with name brand parts, that price isnt out of the question. Theres alot of Capri owners whos engines never came with the beefy rods, that would want to rebuild their engine with atleast these rods. They may or may not want the stock pistons, so that maybe an issue.
Try throwing in a set of forged pistons and you would actually be sitting on an even stronger engine. Then you could easily get 1800 for it. I paid almost 4 grand for my B6T build, but thats including a new crank, forged rods and pistons, complete cleaning, machining and balance of the assembly. If you have the essembly balanced with a set o forged pistons, garunteed, you will no doubt find a buyer between the 323, Capri or even the Festiva communities.

                Good luck.

At this point the whole thing is on hold until my bike sells. Tough trying to sell a motorcycle right now. There are a lot of bikes for sale.

and maybe even the Mx-3 community as well....another thing to note when trying to value a 1.6 GTX engine is that a lot of people that are in the market want do build it them selves and will probably start with a miata block.

If you have it put back to stock, and all of the work documented I would be willing to pay $1k. To me $1800 sounds like alot for a stock rebuild. Just my $.02

I believe the bike is sold so I'm getting pretty excited now about this new project.

I agree in retrospect that $1800 is more than I could reasonably expect. I think I will put the spare engine on hold for the winter anyway as I want to spend the remainder of the summer preparing the car to be my winter ride. I had tossed around the idea of building the spare with 10:1 compression and lowering the boost a bit so that may be something I do down the road and sell the low km stocker that's in the car now.

Who's to say? Thanks for all your input everyone. I can't wait to start a worklog.

What does the auto miata pistons get you? 9:1 I think.... I hear that works really well and there would be no need to turn the boost down at 9:1

Can't wait to see the worklog, good luck.
