    i hate wheel hop

merging on the highway last night at 3:30 am, i hit a bump while boosting in 2nd gear... which set off some serious wheel hop, shattering one of my drivers side CV joints before i could even let off. it seems that not even the beefy toyota axles are immune to the annoyance that is wheel hop .

90 minutes and $100 later the car was back in my driveway (5 miles away). unbelievable how hard it is to find a tow at 4 am. after 30 mins on hold, verizon's roadside assistance flat out told me "we can't seem to locate anyone to tow your vehicle". i'm sure they will charge me for calling them regardless. anyway, i wound up calling the non emergency number for the local state police, they sent out their on-call tow truck driver.

i have spare axles so thats no problem, but i was hoping to work on my tune this weekend not take the car back apart.

That's ****ty to hear Jon .... I've had some serious wheelhop at the track the few times I went but I haven't shattered any parts. Where did the axle break? Hope everything else is intact.

You need to switch to rear wheel drive! They don't break halfshafts because they don't have them, lol! Go with a ford 8.8!

with the trans swap the drivers side axle is real pain though, there is very limited clearance in there. passenger side is no problem... of course, that one couldnt break lol.

turns out it wasn't the cv joint at all, the splined stub which goes into the hub shattered. not so bad... still just a broken axle, except i probably should replace my damn wheelbearing now too (which was brand new in october). it is full of axle shards, lol... and the loose axle flying around mangled the dust seal, too.

Yep, heavier though the toyletta stuff may be, it's still stuff from a street car.

jay you shoudnt have this problem though... considering that each axle will only be getting half the power compared to what mine see.

i guess i will just have to make the escort AWD...

i havent counted splines yet but i have an MR2 axle downstairs in the garage. i'm betting its a 28 spline outer... is there a 4x100 28 spine hub? i could turn down the OD to fit the escort bearing pretty easily..

Bummer man. Wheel hop. I feel your pain. Maybe you should find a way to switch back to escort axles. I have had wonderful luck with mine..
