'Green Goblin' 1991 EGT Rebuild thread

hey y'all, sorry it's been a while, been taking care of family things, and sticking close to facebook for some odd reason...

Anyways, I bought an Escort GT 1991 Cayman edition (pretty rare considering out of 383k of them, only 56k were GT's and even fewer were Caymans!) for 500 bucks, and it needs EVERYTHING. Been sitting up since 03~, so it needs a complete rebuild/tune.

Here is the progress thus far. Going out again tonight to work on tearing it apart, so here is what we have successfully completed.

    Enjoy!!!

it took like 2 hours to get it ready to pull (all in all 5 hours, but unloading it into the shop, drinkin a beer, smoking a cig, takes time ya know)

More pics up tonight after I get back. I'm gonna go ahead and post the pics I have on here, that way you can get the full experience without opening a new window/tab.

    Some random interior/exterior pics...

    [hr]
How many people still have theirs...?

    Before any work...

    Got the hood off

Had to grind a bolt to get the hood off....dammit....

Removed hardware.... You can see all the battery tray and everything from the intake, removed....

    [hr]
Remember to practice safety when working on cars from underneath. Remember to use your jack stands, never rely on JUST a jack to support the cars weight... **** happens.

    All empty

    Spindles removed,

Mark the distributor should you remove it, I scored mine for easy re-installation.

Mac, the gentleman that is helping with the build.

    Other side

Looks like a leak from the VC or worse... the head....

    Further out view...

Progress as of 10 pm last night.

    [hr]
    Gets **** done!

Cam gear cover removed, thinkin about polishing the face on the cam gears.

    Interior again

    Backside of BP engine

    Macs GT (very nice)

    The trans before separating it

I look like I need a hug for petes sake....

This is where the starter goes.

See our little throwout bearing? It was still in decent shape, but always good to replace with new!

    Pressure plate and clutch disc

The Automatic engine/trans that I wanted to install.... Crank is different so it seems to be a No-go without swapping cranks..

On my way out the door

So where you trying to swap in an automatic trans? Oh and all that oil under the distributor is from the distributor O ring not the head.

Nope, I'm using a 92-up BP engine with my 91 trans. That's what Joel told me as well, I don't think it came with the gasket set I bought. What size O-ring is it?

@ Mazda Powered - I am semi performing a factory rebuild, except all filters are going to be K&N, and I'm running full Synth 5w20 in it. Cost me an arm and a leg, but by the time I'm done with the Ecam swap, Kia injectors, 4-1 Header, full mandrel bent exhaust, I'll have more goodies in store. I wish someone had a size reference so I could go ahead and get an O-ring for it and have done. May have my buddy pull the Distr. off the shelf so I can compare to autozones 'vast' quantity of O-rings.

@ Pile - Dude, that garage is big enough for a cherry picker, me, mac 2 toolboxes, a KLZE and a KLDE. Plus the car and some beers, but that's about it. I'd say its a 20x20 shop. Nothing to brag about, but I like it

                NEW PICS!

Goofin off, got the crank pulley removed -

                Remember... Replace your timing belt/chain.....

Sideways view of the pulley side -

I learned an interesting new way to get TDC on an I4

                Dismantling the Valve Cover

The 'I' Cam, (intake side cam)

The 'E' Cam, (exhaust side cam)

In order to do a successful 'E' Cam swap, (swapping another exhaust cam in place of the intake cam) Which improves lift and duration, Cut at the closest 'line' to the lobes -

That's it for now, more pics this wednesday... Hopefully we do heart surgery on the scort and have her running by no later than 6-26-10!!!
PICS!!! Didn't get much done, got the engine in time, new timing belt, and I replaced the VC gasket. Mac was in more of a talk mood tonight instead of a bust ass and get **** done mood, but here are the pics.

For E-cam Swap, Cut at specified point on spare Ecam, replace Icam with modified Ecam.

                  Easy Peezy huh?

Yep. the crappy one you get from advance is a gm water pump seal or something like that. It works for a little while but the Viton one is loads better. And you better degrease the hell out of that thing. Don't forget to replace both main seals too, front(crankshaft timing side) and the rear on the clutch side. and might as well throw a water pump and new timing hardware on it too.

I may have to do that. It's just that the tune up items, cost me over 100 bucks for the belt set, timing belt, oil, filter, plugs and wires.

Got a favorite degreaser? I used to use purple power back in the day, but I don't know what's good anymore.
