    AWD Turbo Protege Recce Rallycar

I've been crazy busy building stuff and haven't been on the forums much as of late---but I just got this project in and I'm super excited about it. A while ago I posted I was looking for an AWD Protege that was close to being done and after some debate with the customer decided to start with JRALLY's stock car in Arizona. Jon's car was straight and reasonably clean, ran good enough and the price was right so it was dropped off here today at the shop to begin the build.

The customer that I built the last two BG Rally escorts for needed a prerunner/recce car to go check out the stages before the race---something that was clean he could drive daily if he wanted, but something that could seat 4 racers and safely run a rally stage at pace...Hard to make a dual purpose car without some sacrifice, but this is going to be my best attempt/vision/creation of his idea's. It's going to need some HP, some gravel/track ready suspension that doesn't kill you on the streets, and all the creature comforts inside like AC, Heaters, stereo, 4 cushy bucket seats with harnesses, GPS/Nav, rallycomputer, underbody protection etc...

Here's the car in it's stock form on day one.

This build will be slower than some of the other builds---I've got some crazy stuff at the shop right now to finish---talk about diversity---a land rover defender that we're putting coilover suspension on, a twin turbo AWD 996 Porsche for a cage, a group 2 VW Golf, World Challenge Volvo TC---I just ordered tubing for everything and it was over a grand!!! Yikes....

Little bit of progress with the carpeting/passenger seat and most of dash out---it doesn't take long...

We should do a local rallycross with it---we'll let Chuck drive as well---afterall he is the owner/paying the bills!!!

The power plant for it got here a week ago or so---sent the turbo out to be rebuilt/cleaned up.

you should do a GT4 trans conversion, it will last better.

Good eye---it's a GTX and an AWD trans---we're going to put both in---I understand the JDM version was better than the oem 4wd Protege trans here in the US---someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks---yeah I've been watching Jay's project and a few others and it may not be necessary for this particular customer's HP range/needs. I'm not going to give him more than 200 whp---he doesn't need it for what he's doing---Thanks again for the suggestion though!

There's nothing in the FSMs to suggest that, they share the same part numbers for gears and everything. Also, the GTR transmission is the same strength as the GTX transmission, don't believe the myths.

its the differentials that are different apparently? with the stock trans is considered 4wd, and once you swap out to the gtx trans it converts to awd...

I'm guessing the GTX tranny lying on the ground is bound to have less mileage, the car has about 230K on the shell. The tranny history is unknown, but the 5th gear synchro has seen better days.

The stock protege trans is a BF unit, open/lockable centerdiff, identical to the 88-90 GTX. The trans that came with that BPT is going to be the better of the two, with a viscous centerdiff and slightly wider/stronger gears. The only thing different 'tween that and a GTR trans is the GTR got shotpeened low gears. All this does nothing to solve the far more common centerdiff failure, so Crazydrummer is pretty much right. Be nice to the bpt box and it'll last a while. The GT4 conversion ain't worth it for a rallyx recce car. Hell I ain't sure it's worth it at all, I hope someday to find out...we're getting closer.
'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

You can run recce at pace? We're usually limited to 35 up here.

                              When somebody can show me information that proves those claims then I'll be the first to apologize for misleading people. Until then, I'll trust Mazda when they say in FSM;
The transaxle and transfer unit is the same as in the 323 BP DOHC turbo models, except that the speedometer gear ratio is changed.
If you want details, go talk to the Kiwis (http://www.amazd.co.nz), they'll have enough patience to set you straight. Furthermore, if by some chance the gears were shotpeened, that was fifteen+ years ago, do you seriously believe that the stress-relieving properties of the process has lasted this long? Absolutely not.

The only difference lies between the GTX/GTR and the GTae transmissions, where the GTae had a short-ratio gear set for races where acceleration and staying in the peak power band was more important than top speed, but most people already know this.
