Cable clutch lever is rocking where it is housed in the gearbox.

My clutch cable broke today & when i was inspecting it to see where it broke i notice that the lever the cable sits in as some play more than usual & it is about an inch out of the gearbox where was once nice n secure. I tried pushing it back into the gearbox but it won't move down any further as if it is bucking on something nor will come out, I never pull too hard as i was not sure what i was getting myself into if i had pulled it out of the gearbox. It have a small amount of play in it rocking from left to right & back n forth. I am still able to select all gears forward & reverse. What is wrong with my gearbox & how can i fix it as i fear it may jump out of the gearbox while i am driving?

I'll check the input for mine in the morning to see if it has the same amount of play.
