    Oil light is on :(

Hey guys, My 88 323GT's oil light came on and was lit for under 2 minutes this morning after a cold start. I just let it idle to see if it would go away and it did. It was below freezing here in Minnesota the last few nights. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. It did not come on at all after that today.

I am not sure what to do, or if there is even anything I can do. The oil is new and has JB engine treatment in it. I am a member of the miata.net some of the miatas are known for having loud hydraulic lash adjuster ticks because crap builds up and doesnt let oil flow between it. They have a treatment where they use 3 quarts ATF and 1 quart oil. Would that ruin my turbo??

I know it sounds crazy but they all do it and have never had problems afterwords. They obviously clean out the ATF after but theoretically it should work... I just worry about my turbo having problems. Any thoughts about using this method to clean my internals? Is there anything else I should check or do?

    The plan
    Run engine to operating temperature
Take the currrent oil out(has under 1k miles)
Put 3 quarts ATF the rest normal motor oil
    Run for 20 minutes
Drain ATF put back original oil
    Run 20 minutes
Drain and put in clean oil with more JB engine treatment.

I will change the filter both times.

    Sound good?
    Love my

that sounds stupid. ticking lifter is parts of all B series engines. just let your engine warm up before driving if you dont like how they sound. and if its still a problem there is a great How-To on cleaning them, or take the easy way out and buy a set of lifter on ebay for $80. the B6T and BP lifters are all the same.

also if its that cold where you live you should be changing the wieght of your oil for winter driving. it will help for cold starts and keep your engine running warmer in the cold

The oil in there is "5w30" for cold weather but, it is jiffylube style bulk bought soy sauce. I will be changing the oil to somethnig better this weekend. I think it was a combination of 8 degree weather and crappy oil. I have looked into an oil pressure gauge, I started a thread about it awhile ago but no one had any input, I found a mechanical gauge for $5 locally. Just wonder if the thread adapters it came with will fit in my existing oil pressure switch hole.

I think I've asked these questions several times: Do you own a Factory Service Manual?
Have you ever searched the yahoo forum?

I read that thread he said he used this http://www.mcmaster.com/#4860k141/=9wmuh5 Thread adapter so what he meant is his mechanical gauges adapter fit inside this adapter which fits in the block.... Right, right. right?

Yes... Just buy the damn thing. No more spoon-feeding you information.

I want to help you, but the next thing you'll ask me is if you'll need thread sealant, or if using two dis-similar metals will result in elctrolysis, or if brass is made from "witchcraft", or if I'm certain that this information is actually "real", and not made up several years ago then posted on some fake yahoo 323GTX forum when I was abusing alcohol and drugs to cope with working the last 12 years without seeing the sun.

I'm pulling the red ejection handle now.

                <--- That's my "concerned" face.

guess it's too late to convince you to buy the oil cooler sandwich adapter plate instead then, eh? Nevermind.

If you switch to a good synthetic oil, you can run thinner oil and still have better protection. you could run 0w30 for the winter for faster oil flow in extreme cold. I run Amsoil 10w40 for summer, 5w40 in winter. Last week it was -8 F for a low, high of 10 degrees, my car ticked for like 10 seconds. With the 10w40 it ticked for about 2 minutes.
                      Redline is anouther good oil.
Jiffy lube uses Quaker State wich is a parafin (wax) base oil, Not good for extreme cold. I've seen bulk tanks of it get an inch of solid wax on top from sitting idle for a week. Some batches are worse than others for this!
I won't use Quaker State in my lawn mower!

I have only put 1k miles on the car, the previous owner had the oil changed the day I bought it. It was not jiffy lube but an equivalent. I bought some valvoline 5w30. Not sure if I want to spend the cash on synthetic untill I have the engine rebuilt. I know you cant break in with synthetic I just mean I will wait. My motor doesnt tick though. It has more than twice the mileage than my miata (which ticks) its weird how smooth it is.

I bought a bosch oil filter. Figure its better than any fram which is all they had at the time.

If I buy the miata adapter sandwich plate I get to keep the idiot light, I will have to reroute my coolant line that went to the original plate(or buy one that screws onto the original plate) , and It will be easier to hook up an oil pressure/temperature gauge sensors.

Anything else I am missing? The miata adapter had the same threading as our b6t block so which one should I get?

                          Hows that?
