    New Here/New Protege

Hi, I'm new to this forum, I decided to join since I picked up this 91 protege. I also have a 07 MS3 that got me into Mazdas. It's been a great vehicle so I hope this one will be as well once I get it fixed up.

It's an LS with the 1.8 DOHC, I heard it's a really good motor so I can't wait to get all the bugs out of it.

I decided to pull it apart because it's leaking a lot of oil. It runs but it needs some work. I have new ball joints for it and a complete gasket set. We'll see how it goes after I get finished.

These axle nut's were a bitch to get off. I ended up having to chisel them off.

I've never worked on these before but they seem pretty simple. If anyones knows and tips or tricks or things to look out for please feel free to let me know. I'm always open to advice.

Welcome to the club. Looks like you have got yourself a clean ride. You also seem to have a very nice work ethic and garage to work in. That being said these things are very simple indeed. I say best thing to have is a FSM or even a Chilton guide to get ya started. Other then that, sit back and start reading these pages.

Those axle nuts can be a pain. I've broken many breaker bars on them. That's why I finally upgraded to air tools

Tell me about it! My 1/2 inch impact gun wouldn't break them loose and I ended up breaking a 24" craftsman bar, a 36" oem bar and bent my ampro bar. I'm just glad I didn't damage the axle threads.

I just had to do my LF axle that broke 3 breaker bars on me, 2 craftsman and one snap on. I had to heat the nut cherry red and use an impact gun, and it still took a half hour of heat/gun/heat/gun lol...

Clean little protege you got there, get it runnin and throw some boost at it!!! Just dont be upset if it ends up faster than your MS3 lol

Well the body is straight but it needs some paint and tlc. I believe the rims are stock, they are made by BMW. I only paid 350 for it so I can't complain.

I'd paint the engine bay while the engine is out or atleast clean it up if it needs it.

Oh yea lx lol, I'm used to integra acronyms. The motor was leaking oil from almost all the seals. Rear main is bad, front crank seal is bad, cam seals were bad. It's been poorly taken care off. With 260k on it I'm suprised it lasted this long. I guess the guy before me just kept pouring more oil in every week as it leaked out. Doing that for 4 years made a mess. I spent all day pressure washing everything to try and get the oil off.

There are some really nice 2nd gen proteges on here. I didn't know anyone spent that much time on them.

Looks good! I can't wait to see what you do with it. Looks like you also have an escort outside the garage in the first pic.

Axle nuts have always come off easily for me. At least so far. The axles themselves are a pain sometimes.

I just noticed you're in Knoxville (I assmue TN). That's not that far from me.
