    Engine knocking?.. :(

ok, so today i decided to change out my fuel rails off my straight neck manifold, and swap them into my millenia one. so i painted them up and put them in. strarted it up, only to have a misfire. im guessing one of the injectors was dead. i drove it around the block and it didnt clear up. i figured id just swap it out, no big deal. as i pulled in the driveway the car just shut off. as i tried to start it acted as if it was locked up. like the starter would turn and just stop with a nasty sound.

finally got it to turn over and this is what it sounds like.. i have no clue whats wrong with it.

all i did was change out fuel rails. then this happened.

Pull plugs and see how soaked they are, then check oil and see if it's way beyond full and stinks like gas. You mighta hydrolocked the engine, which would explain the symptoms, and if the cylinders were fulla gas, that'll end up filling the sump, then thinning the crap outta the oil in one or more HLA's, making that wonderful clatter and very low compression if you happen to test for that. Whatever you do, DO NOT assume your cylinders are empty and crank it over with the plugs out, checking for spark. Though my initial conditions were very different, this end result looks, ah, familiar....

just posted another video of it running.. i hope i didnt. you just described everything that has happen. plugs soaked. thin oil, etc..

when i took the manifold off there was gas coming out to the throttle body, so the manifold was full of gas as well.

put your old injectors in. & be careful not to **** up the o-rings. use vasoline when assembling them & they should just POP into place.

pull all of your plugs out . pull the power to the distributer & crank it. push the **** out of the cylinders. good chance you'll have gas everywhere. so have some rags on hand (but do not block they cylinders with rags)

I just cringed listening to that. Sorry you're having issues. Hopefully you can get her purring again and not give up on her. What was the reason for swapping the injectors in the first place?

It will probably be cheaper to rebuild. Don't think anyone is selling one local for less than 800 bucks.

All I wanted to do was change rails because I had painted the other set.

As long as it did not score any crank journals with that nice rod knock you now have, just put new std. bearings and rings in it for cheap and be done with it, or just a std. set of bearings to get it going.

Yeah stop driving on it right away... pull the pan and check the crank.. If its not warped and still with in spec you might be able to just throw a set of bearings in it and get back on the road again.. did you drain all the oil out and put new oil in after you found the motor flooded in gas??

Yeah, that sounds pretty bad, you prolly bent a rod. Just to make sure, before you start tearing things apart, put a coat hanger down the plug holes one by one and turn the engine by hand to TDC on each cylinder. Mark the coat hanger, and see if one or more of them come up short compared to the other ones. There is still a (very) slight chance that all that is is topend noise, especially if you haven't changed the oil yet. My HLA's took several minutes to flush themselves and recover.

Just so you know cold what happened, when you swapped rails and heard the misfire, what you thought was a dead injector was an injector that was stuck open, frozen pintle by rust or what have you, dumping fuel at a constant 50psi into that cylinder. It eventually built up enough liquid even while it was idling to hydrolock that piston and stop the thing dead. I shall be adding this lil life lesson to my list of things to check before starting the car, next time I find myself installing injectors.

BTW, if you can get another used engine for 8 bills, that'll by far be the cheapest way to go. Bent rod almost certainly goes with busted rind lands. You'll know more once it's opened up, but I bet it ain't gonna be just a bearing swap. Rod and piston, cylinder work, possible bent valves, doing it right means doing all 6, etc etc etc....
