    Part of shift linkage missing?

    Okay,
I just got the car, and the shifter is kinda funky. It is obviously missing one or more parts. First off, the shifter sits on the exhaust pipe (it's not bolted down, so it just sits there and rattles away) I have to hold it in mid-air to get it into 4th. and there seems to be no 5th gear. I took it on the freeway and it went to about 4k rpms at 70mph so, pretty sure it's a 5-speed. That and the shift knob has the 5-speed pattern. Anyway, does anyone know why I can shift into all the other gears (1-4 and R) but not 5th? And what do I need to bolt this thing onto the body?

    Oh, it's an 86 non-GTX. Thanks

an 86 GTX in San Jose CA? hmmmm... and the shifter fell through the floor and is sitting on the exhaust? Sounds like you got ripped off on the GTX thing and bought a rusted out base model 323

FWD 323 = rod shifter = fallen shifter that sits on the exhaust

AWD 323 GTX = cable shifter = no fallen shifter

there is alot of fixes on this board for the issue you have.

Yeap. I'm pretty mechanically inclined. I wanted to say, It's an LX (which I assume all of them got the 5-speed) but I guess GTX came out from reading too much forum. :/

Anyway, what do you think could be up with 5th gear? Is it because my linkage is messed up that I can't engage it? Or could the gears be sheared to the point where I'm in 5th but it's acting like neutral? I don't think I feel the bump go into 5th, so I'm thinking it's the same linkage issue.

Drove it some more, seems like 5th gear just isn't there. I pushed it into 5th and it acted like it was in neutral. Can you get to 5th gear/reverse without taking the trans out of the car?

I saw somewhere that there is a 5th gear swap, but I can't find the FAQ for some reason. Anyone done this/have a link?

              TIA

Download the factory service manual, the link is on this forum.

While you are at pnp, get the shifter linkage and hardware.

There was a white 86 sedan in the back of the lot, a while back.

If you need help, pm me.

On Commercial way. North, iirc. Back of the lot, where the fence is, the crusher is behind that.

The white 86 sedan that I was eying until some jerk stole all the parts I wanted off it? That one?

Yeah! The one that was garaged it's entire life and was spotless.
It was just sitting there, unmolested, waiting for someone who really would appreciate what it had to give.

well, the white 86 on commercial? Gone. at least, i didn't see it there. There is a decent red 89 hatch. It's a super base model tho.

anyway, I have a question. my car has the electronic cluster, and I'm wondering.. why is my temperature gauge blinking?

well it could be a bad ground, bad sensor, bad wiring, or a bad dash cluster. I would start checking them in that order.
