    Ryan's Spherical SS LCA bushings!

Today I finally got around to installing my LCA bushings. For those who have not seen these, Ryan (FE3-323) Had 10 sets of these made. They are spherical lower control arm bushings with 316 Stainless Steel casings. The rear bushing was offset to increase the angle of Caster of the front suspension. (strut placement from this: l to this: / looking from driver side) This has Many benefits, but basically the front wheel is shifted forwards, increasing the wheelbase of the car. This also shifts the weight of the vehicle and alters the suspension geometry. More weight is between the wheels and less is hanging in front of the wheels. Another benefit is the fact that these eliminate front to rear deflection of the bushings, as well as the binding effects of poly and rubber. The good news for you is that he is having more made. That is really good news for you! I am signed up for another set as of now, but if I had the cash, I would buy a dozen sets! I love them! Go check out the group buy!

I have a road I test all my new suspension mods on. It's about 4.2 miles long, and Bing Maps says it's about a 22 minute drive from the bottom to the top (LOL). Begining elevation is 5900' above sea level, Peak elevation is 7850'. There are decreasing-radius, increasing radius, sweepers, and tight corners, as well as 2 sets of three ultra-tight switchbacks. The view at the top is beautiful, but that's not why I'm here.

With new modifications I usually ease my way into the mountain and gradually pick up the pace. I usually don't set a new record until the 3rd or 4th run on a new setup. The fastest this car has gone bottom to top until now is 6 minutes 24 seconds.

I could feel the difference these bushings made immediately. Bottom to top today was roughly 5:58 but I was so shaken by the time I hit the top that I forgot to stop the timer. I remerbered it approximately 10 seconds later... it said 6:08, I believe it was 10 seconds. I'll check again another day. That's not really what matters. The way these have increased response is unbelievable! It's really tough to put into words. I point the car and it goes. It was really noticable in the decreasing radius corners. As I had to increase the steering angle, the car continued to bite the ground harder and harder. Normally on those corners I wouldn't start to hit the throttle until I've hit the tightest part of the corner. Tonight, I eased into the throttle as I started to increase the steering angle... Normally this would have caused some understeer, but tonight it just gripped and turned harder. The way the car responds now made me want more, and it caused me to push harder and harder. I normally just cruise on the way down, because I've boiled my brakes trying to run the downhill (that sucked!) but I was pushing it pretty hard with the new setup because it is addicting! I eased off when I caught a whif of my brakes though.

Another notable change was when hitting bumps and dips in the road. I noted that the shock caused by hitting bumps and dips was far less severe with the sphericals. I could feel the springs and struts doing the work that used to disperse through the bushings. The result is a lot more predictable suspension movement, which made my confidence and comfort level go up. Instead of slowing for the cracks and bumps in the corners I was able to mow right over them, without the car doing anything funny. I also transitioned from pavement to dirt with a sharp 3" drop in mid corner, the car started to oversteer, but with a little opposite input I caught it without any issue. The transition was a lot smoother than in the past.

I'm still a little speech-less, and finding it hard to translate what I felt into words. I will add to this after a few more drives...

All in all, These bushings Effing kick ass! My car feels completely different now, and it's good! Anyone who can afford these, NEEDS to but a set. You will not regret it!

Thanks Ryan! You are the MAN!

Seriously! These are crazy! I didn't really know what to expect, but these bushings surpassed my expectations for sure. I can't wait to get some more runs on them, then I can set a personal record on my mountain! (My Probe went 5:38 on the mountain)

Okay, after another drive and a little reading on the subject, I've disected my experience a little better.

First off; My experience with the increased response and the added stability that inspired confidence. This was likely the result of one of the several upgrades these bushings provide... The positive caster. To put it simply; positive caster does two things. First, it aids in adding negative camber while cornering. Camber potentially increases the grip of of the tires while cornering, which is likely why I could push the corners harder than I could before. The camber effect actually lifts the front of the vehicle in turn, because the car is riding on the outer edges of the tires, which are further away from the very center point of the wheel/tire combo when compared to the flat contact patch. This is where the second benefit comes into play; The weight of the car naturally wants to settle in it's lowest point possible because of gravity. So in effect the weight of the car wants to return the tires to the flatest point possible... The center position. That means, the car is now trying harder to re-center the wheels and keep them there. This adds stability to the vehicle especially at higher speeds, which I can confirm. The negative result of this, is increased steering effort. I will say that it is neglegant however. I have manual steering, and while it is slightly harder to turn the wheels, it is in no way un-bearable or annoying. And the benefits greatly out-weigh this "side effect." I would venture that with power steering you wouldn't even notice it.

The second upgrade these bushings provide is the fact that the pivot point of the bushings is now fixed in it's position. Rubber and poly deflect to certain degrees depending on durometer and wear and tear etc... This deflection results in un-predictable movements of your suspension. Your car was designed with this in mind, so it's not a safety concern, but when looking for predictability of performance, it is nowhere near ideal. If you are looking for every ounce of performance, I promise that rubber or polyurethane are not providing it. In a performance setting, you want your suspension to do the same thing every time.

While some would be worried about the harshness of having metal bushings in the suspension, I assure you that these are probably less harsh than what you have in your car. The spherical center of these bushings provides every movement that your suspension requires to opperate correctly and smoothly, while it eliminates every negative movement that rubber and poly bushings provide. The result is predictable movements time and time again, in turn helping you ensure your car wont suddenly do something goofy or unpredictable. That alone, could make the difference of finishing a race, or surviving an emergency maneuver on the highway.

Also notable about these bushings, there are two points that you can increase the caster of your front suspension. The first is the geometry of the knuckle/hub. By moving that froward you are increasing caster and wheelbase, the other point is at the top of the strut. You can move the center rod of the strut rearwards with caster adjustable plates without increasing the wheelbase. The increase in wheelbase (which is what these bushings do) cause more of the vehicles weight to rest between the wheels or in a more neutral position. This is ideal for any vehicle that goes around corners as it helps distribute the forces of your vehicle's mass in a more linear or neutral fashion. Everyone wants that magical 50/50 number, and while these bushings won't alone provide that, it does get it closer.

I will continue to collect data and experiences of these bushings, but for now all I can say is; I love my car!

also... My odo was at 60,092 when these were installed. This is my daily driver, so I will be racking up miles, and testing the durability of these. They were built to last, and I plan to put that to the test!

                Cheers!

Glad to hear some talk about caster in there. Not a lot of people realize or take the time to research the benefits in increasing front caster. Awesome write up so far, looking forward to seeing your next review lol

It'll have to wait. The mountain beside it is on fire! 775 Acres burnt so far, and now the fire is less than 1 mile from my house. Last night I drove up the mountain and there were 1000s of people taking pics of the fire.

That sucks, a huge part of my favorite biking/hiking/driving area went up in flames a few years back. I didn't live so close to the affected area though, I would have freaked out. Good luck with that.
